Who prefers a single pickup guitar?

I've really been thinking about it a lot lately. And have come to the conclusion that I prefer single pickup guitars. So much so that I am considering removing the neck pickup from my brent hinds V.

Re: Who prefers a single pickup guitar?

Personally, I wouldn't take a neck pickup out of a guitar already fitted with one if there wasn't a way for me to cover up the hole without it looking like something used to be there.

That said, I'm a huge fan of single bridge pickup guitars and own a couple. No idea why, but I gravitate toward them.

Re: Who prefers a single pickup guitar?

Can't say I prefer them, but I can make due with one. I've had a couple over the years. The simplicity is nice. Don't think I could solely have a single p'up guitar though. Some of my favorite tones come from a p90 neck or the middle position of a p90 neck/HB bridge. Currently, I'm in the middle of two single p'up projects. A pine Esquire (BF 1400) and a maple/alder strat (lil screamin demon). Should be fun.

Funny, similar question has been on my mind recently. It’s the one tone option I don’t have in my studio so I have no experience - I’ve been thinking about finding a cheap(ish) LP Junior and putting in a 59/Custom, so I could add push-pull for split.

I don’t hint I’d want to lose a neck pickup from any of my current stable - although Phil X’s approach of putting “something” in the neck pocket would be my approach if I did!

Re: Who prefers a single pickup guitar?

I’ve always thought that the idea of a single pickup guitar seemed kind of silly… I mean, really? Is that neck pickup bothering you that much?

That being said, one of the projects I have going on right now is a single pickup partscaster… So I guess I’ll find out!

I can’t say that I prefer one but I also have been toying with the idea of a single HB build.

Re: Who prefers a single pickup guitar?

I use the neck by itself and the neck/bridge combo too much to ever consider having one. It’s not like the neck pickup gets in the way or anything.

I own a Les Paul guitar with removable pickups. If you dont use your neck pickup, then a single bridge pickup guitar yield a more free ringing sound. While a removed bridge pickup has no audible effects on the neck sound.

Re: Who prefers a single pickup guitar?

I can cover a LOT of ground with the right medium to high output bridge pickup and a push/pull coil split

Been thinking about having a guitar made with a single neck pickup also, just for fun!

Re: Who prefers a single pickup guitar?

I do like a neck pickup for certain things mainly cleans. But I prefer single coils or P90's for that. I'm not sure if it's true or not about the magnetic pull. But there is just something about the sound of a junior or Esquire.
With their more simple electronics lay out. The Phil X reference putting stuff in the holes for neck pickups is kinda funny. About 15 years ago I had a dean that I took the neck pickup out of. I had a hot wheels type Harley Davidson that i epoxied in the hole. And people though I was crazy.

Re: Who prefers a single pickup guitar?

I could go without a bridge pickup, since 75% of my playing is the neck pickup. But I don't have to.

Re: Who prefers a single pickup guitar?

I have an old ES-175 with just a P90 neck. I could be fine with that, but I don’t prefer it, and certainly wouldn’t want just a bridge pickup.

Re: Who prefers a single pickup guitar?

A single humbucker is a cool thing to have if it's an interesting pickup, like an A8 59/C, on a bare bones guitar, but I prefer lots of switching options on mine. Some of my guitars have as many as three pickups.

Re: Who prefers a single pickup guitar?

My personal favorite setup is a Humbucker in the bridge and single coil or P90 in the neck...with some creative wiring, there's not much you can't do at that point and you're not overwhelmed with options

Re: Who prefers a single pickup guitar?

I have neck humbucker guitars when needed, but honestly speaking I can do most of the stuff I do on the bridge pickup alone. In a way I find it to be an interesting challenge: how much of the typical neck pickup stuff can you manage to do well with a bridge pickup? This goes both for technique and setup.

Re: Who prefers a single pickup guitar?

I dig Jr's and I've owned a few single pup guitars over time

Re: Who prefers a single pickup guitar?

Just leave it in but remove it from the circuit,,,,,,,no good reason to have a big empty hole lol.
Normally I remove the tone-pot because I rarely use it and like to move the volume-pot down there out of the way, but if you have a brighter bridge and no neck then a tone-pot is a good thing to have for bridge-leads.

Re: Who prefers a single pickup guitar?

The only single pickup guitars I'd consider owning, I already do.......a Les Paul Jr and a Tele esquire.

But they're only 2 of a large collection of almost all multi pickup guitars.....

Re: Who prefers a single pickup guitar?

I could not do it. I use the neck pickup (or both pickups) too often to just go with only a bridge pickup. Just my personal preference.

Re: Who prefers a single pickup guitar?

lol my v only has a dimebucker but i have a couple wiring mods
