Who said emg's were extremely hot???????? hell no

I suppose it's my fault, so now i'll erase all my posts here.

Re: Who said emg's were extremely hot???????? hell no

Back to the topic at hand....

The pickups themselves are not not at all... around 10k if I recall. It's the boosted signal that gives you the guts to scream metal tones with them. A weaker signal could be caused by a weak battery. Be sure the 9v is still providing power. I have a very hard time believing the 81 can't push an amp as hard as any passive pickup. My 81 loaded Ibanez is the only guitar that can make a JB shake at the knees... it's that brutal.

Re: Who said emg's were extremely hot???????? hell no

EMG's are cool - you just have to know what they are. I agree with the thread starter that overall EMG's are not any hotter than any other pickups. There are passive pickups like the DD that are hotter but what does that have to do with anything? It's the TONE that matters right brothers and sisters? EMG's have a certain tone to them in my experience - 81's are hot and distorted, 85's are warm and nice with medium output, and 60's (alnico) have a cool almost P90/Filtertron'ish vibe to them and are medium-hot in output. These are what I have used over the years, mostly in LP's and they have thoer place. If you have many guitars with passives it's nice to have at least one with actives. I have also used the SD actives and they sound good too, just too hot for what I like. FWIW, I use passive SD's 99.99% of the time. Peace :)

Re: Who said emg's were extremely hot???????? hell no

Just to clarify about output, when I say the "DD is hotter" what I am refering to is that relatively speaking, there are hot and not-so-hot output pickups in both passives and actives. DD's are hotter than 85's for instance but an 81 is probably going to be hotter than a C5. YMMV.

Not sure if that makes it clearer or confuses. Hopefully it clarify's the point. Peace :)

Re: Who said emg's were extremely hot???????? hell no

I have both pickups and the EMGs are slightly hotter than the Duncan Distortion.

Different strokes for different folks....

Yeah, that is pretty true. Its more a matter of maturity. I mean theres just as many people in they're fiftys like that kid as there are people close ta your age like that kid. The human race is pretty hostile and illogical in general. So yer right, I probably shouldn't have placed ya in the same catigory as that lame kid.
So sorry. No offence intended towards you. I just tend to get irritated when people get all "My opinion is better than yours" on stuff.
So yet again, Sorry about that. I certainly wouldn't wanna imply that all kids your age are like that. And thats not what I was trying to mean. But it came out sounding that way. So sorry, no offence intended ta kids your age.....Ed

I figured you were speaking in absolutives without actually meaning to, and I appreciate the formal apology. :)

Although I can't blame you; most people in the age range at hand are complete dumbasses. :laugh2: :smack:

Re: Who said emg's were extremely hot???????? hell no

Distortion has much better tone too. When I was using a Zakk Wylde Set in one of my Schecters I quickly got bored with the one trick pony sound. And they are not versatile at all. Try playing something lower gain on them, yuck. They were good for a super clean jazz sound in the neck with the 85 though.

I resent that remark. Age has close to nothing to do with hostility or logic.

I have noticed your the exception........

And I have been known to post some stupid idiotic nonsence.

The reason why they're not versatile is because you didn't get something like the 60 in the neck....the 85 is WAY to hot in the neck regardless of whether Zakk uses it....his clean blows anyway.

To my ears the 85 sounds hotter than the 81 and sounds better...IMHO. Having tryed both in the bridge.

As far as hotter....I think the 498T to my ears was hotter than both at low volumes. Under high volumes though it was mud. Another reason why the EMG is wound lighter around a DC resistance of 10. So what they have a preamp.......What are all the effects people stomp on these days to get there? That is sterile to me when your stomping on 5 different pedals.

Re: Who said emg's were extremely hot???????? hell no

I am still curious about my post in this thread.....does EMG make vintage(ish) pups or pups that are not as powerful?

Re: Who said emg's were extremely hot???????? hell no

I have always been happy with the EMG 85. I don't know how "vintage(ish)" it sounds but it is full and warm and is great for Blues and Classic Rock sounds. I have used a 60 neck/85 bridge combo with great success. The 60 is an awsome neck pickup in a LP.

They make strat and tele pickups, as well as a single coil in a humbucker housing.

Check out the SAV, and SLV single coils.

Re: Who said emg's were extremely hot???????? hell no

the emg 60 is the "vintage" sounding emg. its lower output and more balanced than either the 85 or 81. its rob turner's favorite emg. i used emgs for years (81, 85, ,60 s, sa, sv, pa2, spc)and they arent bad, but they dont have the tonal complexity that a good passive pup does. i used to be a metal kid and loved metallica (circa justice), they used emgs and so did i.
i still have a pickguard loaded with emgs but i cant remember the last time i even saw it, let alone played a note with it

Couldn't agree more.....I have yet to come across a neck pickup that's passive that I like more than the 60.

WAAAAYYY underated neck pickup IMO.....screw the 85 in the neck...go for the 60.

Re: Who said emg's were extremely hot???????? hell no

the 60 has some similar qualitys to a jazz

The 85 is good for all out shred lead work, but is kinda limited to that roll. I found it to be too fat/bassy sounding (in the neck) to clean up well. It also had a nice tone when you rolled the 85's volume down and blended it with a hot bridge 81.

I much prefer the 60....though I sometimes miss that 85 lead sound.

Re: Who said emg's were extremely hot???????? hell no

These guys hit it... the 60 is a more vintage voiced pickup that works wonderfully in teh neck position. It's much smoother than the 85n, IMO, and it cleans up much better. I tend to prefer it over the 85n for all leads. Whenever I'm "shredding" I'll typically be using the bridge pickup (81 in my case).
