Who says A2 pickups don't work for metal!!

Re: Who says A2 pickups don't work for metal!!

Morons, mostly.

Any pickup will work for metal....so long as the amp does the bulk of the tone-shaping.

I keep trying to tell people that anything works for anything (though with varying degrees of difficulty/extra effort involved - like speed metal wankery on a 12-fret parlor guitar) but they insist they need a distortion-class pickup AND a TripleRec.

Ive got a Dirty Finger Plus that came in my ES335 Studio. Its a DF with an A2 mag,.and is tighter and more articulate than most a5 and ceramic pickups I have owned and bonus is not harsh like most HO pups, with more powerful mags.

Not me as I cut this rhythm track in 1995 playing my late 70's Ibanez Artist in Drop D with a Custom Custom through a JMP-1/9200 Marshall. The solo track was my 89 Carvin DC 200 with their actives and a M22SD.

Metal is such a loose term nowadays, there's bound to be at least ten different subgenres for any kind of pickup...

Mostly Blueman. Not that he plays metal. Or thinks an A2 works for anything.

Who says? People of formulaic thinking, that's who.

I dunno.

I had a custom custom in one of my strats a while back. Strat+CC should be a classic sounding great combo right? It sounded good at home. On a whim, I took it to band practice one day when I was still playing in a black/death/thrash metal band. No matter what I did to my amp or my EQ Pedal, I just could not get that pickup to sit right in the mix. In the same guitar, the regular ceramic Custom, C8, C4 and even an RCA3 Custom all had no problems finding their comfy spot in a full band mix, but the CC just wouldn't do it. It just couldn't get a nice tight, articulate chunkiness that sounded good with the rest of the band.

The A2 promptly came right out.

ymmv, but that was my experience with A2 attempting metal and failing miserably.

Re: Who says A2 pickups don't work for metal!!

The pickup incidentally is an old MJ wound JB with a roughcast A2
I slightly prefer the A5 but let's so you used one on the rhythm track and the other on the lead etc... I like em both!
Love the CC I have an MJ wound CC which I think is pretty rare.

Re: Who says A2 pickups don't work for metal!!

My modified Custom Shop IM1 absolutely kills for modern metal tones. So tight in the low end its hard to believe that there's an A2 in it, but there is.

Re: Who says A2 pickups don't work for metal!!

yeah, I have the custom custom in my explorer and it can do metal. My amp is also to thank for most of the tone shaping in that regard
