Who traded me that Digitech Envelope Filter?

For some unknown reason, 12-year-old who was a bass player, then a drummer, became a bass player again last week while I was out of town. I think he met some kids, one of whom was a guitar player, and the other a drummer, so he made the same logical conclusion I've been patiently trying to get through his skull all year: bass players always have a gig.

Anyway, to celebrate, I let him try out a Digitech Envelope Filter ("The same model that Flea uses.") that I got from somebody on here - traded for a modded DS-1 I wasn't using. I figured:

1) I already have dirt boxes, and don't have an envelope filter, so why not?

2) If I end up sticking in a drawer and then letting my kid have it, an envelope follower is much better on bass than a distortion.

Anyway, like father like son; more into messing around with the gear than learning to play the instrument. He's downstairs now, making weird chirpy, blatty noises. I wonder if this is what Bootsy Collin's house was like when he was twelve?

P.S. I showed him the main riff to Superstition and wrote out the tab (AND the music, thank you very much) so the day's not a total loss education-wise.

Ok, ok...I did it. I'm not proud of it.

No, wait...that's not true. Not the pride part, but the confession.

I traded you a DOD FX25B Envelope Filter for a Monte Allums mod BOSS DS-1.

Glad your kid is rockin' it out, and even gladder that he's kicked the drum habit! :laugh2:

THERE you are! I hope you're enjoying the Recto Mod, that's a great pedal but just not "me".

We have this weird, cranky neighbor next door who's very protective (like, pyscho protective) of his crappy-cabin-and-many-junkpiles property. I overheard Drew telling his Mom the other night that the neighbor yelled at him for inadvertantly hitting his fence (which has been lying in the yard since a windstorm last winter) with a baseball. "So," says Drew, "I took my bass and amp out on the front porch and played as loud as it would go."

:lmao: Gotta find this kid an SVT.

I am really liking the Recto mod DS-1 --- I didn't like it as much until I got the Blackheart head, and now it's really super subtle and crunchy in a clean way. Hard to describe, but it's an essential part of my rig now. Big thanks.

Tell the kid to keep it up! The world needs more bass players!

Re: Who traded me that Digitech Envelope Filter?

The music teachers at school are falling all over themselves to keep him in orchestra next year (string bass) and get him into the stage band. The only other bass player is headed off to high school.

bass is a fantastic way to keep involved with bands, especially if you move to a new area :)

look out for different genres of music, as bass is far more wide-reaching than guitar.. i went off on a massive hip-hop (jurassic 5, people under the stairs) trip when i got serious with bass, and having the unusual approach to each peice was really handy!
