who used the middle pickup by itself on their strat setup?

For those of you who have a SSS, HSS or HSH setup, do you find much use for the middle pickup by itself, or do you mainly use it to combine with the neck & bridge pickups?

Re: who used the middle pickup by itself on their strat setup?

i used to only use it combined with the others but now i find myself using it just as much as either the bridge or neck.

not as fat and round as the neck, not as bright or thin as the bridge. it can be a great lead tone or a balanced rhythm tone. big fan converted from a non-user

usage is probably 25% neck, 15% n/m, 25% middle, 10% m/b, 25% bridge

I use it all the time. It's a great rhythm pickup when adjust right and the right pickup is in the guitar. I've got mine wired so there's no tone control on it, just the neck and bridge.

I have hsh hss sss guitars, and I use the middle pickup often for twangy cleans and light overdrive, I also use it with flangers, autowah and chorus.

nice rhythm, lead tones, I also use it with an acoustic simulator,

Its a little brighter than the neck pickup and a darker than the bridge pickup, so for me very useful, just experiment with it,

The middle pickup is the strangest sounding pickup of the three. I haven't been too successful using it much. I mostly use the bridge and the neck pickups.

It sure has its place. Robin Trower is a perfect example.

I love the tones that you can get out of the middle pickup either by itself or in combination. For some odd reason it always gets in my way and I end up ripping it out of my guitars. I have one Strat left with a middle pickup and it was the first electric that I ever owned. The edges of the pickup are completly chewed up and after some playing it gets pushed into the cavity. Life is evil and ironic like that.

I use the middle pickup alone on my hsh setup, but only for cleaner passages. Primarily the middle pup I have is used with the neck or bridge (2 and 4 positions) pups for a brighter, twang sound.

I used to hate the notch positions, but lately (probably mostly due to the full SD pickups) I'm getting into N+M more. However, I always thought it would be cool to have some sort of HR/VR/CR setup, or a hot full humbucker in the bridge, vintage in the neck and a vintage SC in the middle to use on its own.

A guy I used to play with had a MIM with a Hot Rails/stock MIM/Classic Stack and the neck and middle sounded different enough that he could set up the neck as a full clean metal sound and the stock middle as a bright vintage sound.

I like the middle pickup on a Strat. Great for chording and laying back a little without losing volume while someone else takes a lead. I've noticed when playing in a group or a jam session that if I just turn the volume down some of the "fullness" of the group disappears. Using the middle pickup fixes that. I can get similar results in an H-H setup by using the middle position: not quite as much cut or boom.

I use the middle Strat pickup in my Nashville Tele quite a bit, mostly for rhythm parts. I keep it low, almost flush with the pickguard 1) to keep it out of the way of my picking, and 2) to lower its volume in relation to the others. That way, I can switch to it without cutting the volume control which would kill the highs.

I also like the bridge/middle notch position.

One of the more interesting strat setups I had seen was for a guitarist that was on tour with Eric Clapton. He had a full sized humbucker in the middle and a full sized humbucker in the bridge and nothing at the neck. I really like that setup.

andy fairweather low

i always figured it was to stay out of claptons way and keep the tone brighter and more focused.

Re: who used the middle pickup by itself on their strat setup?

For a while, that was probably the most common sound used by a lot of the Austin/Dallas/New England blues guys: Anson, Jimmie, Ronnie, Kid Ramos, Kid Bangham, Mike Welsh, etc etc etc. It's kinda cliche at this point...

Re: who used the middle pickup by itself on their strat setup?

Heh, I use it as a way to get something somewhat like a neck-humbucker tone from my strat while having a real strat single in the neck.

It's a bit of a compromise but having a strat single in the neck is extremely important to me. The middle has enough juice to get rid of the weirdness of the position and still mimmic a neck pickup, albeit a bit more focused. It can also handle rhythm nicely from that position, not too thick to do it.

Re: who used the middle pickup by itself on their strat setup?

I do it sometimes. It cuts nicely without being too thin. And since I keep it lower than the neck and bridge single coils, it sounds cleaner and more jangly too.

Re: who used the middle pickup by itself on their strat setup?

Yeah, I like it... I agree with Diego in that it cuts nicely without being too thin.... I tend to stay in the 2, 3, 4 positions on Strat... 2 being my favorite... but I go 1 and 5 a lot on my nashville Tele.......... I'm a bit confuzzled :D

Re: who used the middle pickup by itself on their strat setup?

I have tried for years to get a Great, not good, alternate lead tone with the middle pickup. Tried the 1/4lb, Hot, Custom, stock, etc. All are close, but not Great. I haven't found the perfect one yet. I think I need a really mid-range focused tone that still has presence. The hot is close, but not enough treble. Maybe an UNwound Hot. The 1/4lb and Custom dont have enough mids... Maybe a P-90???

Re: who used the middle pickup by itself on their strat setup?

the stratbro90 in the middle has become my go to slide sound, nice and thick but a good amount of cut as well
