I had a gig today and got a real nice sound out of my amp but I noticed the treble-beam. So, I ordered a beam blocker and see how it will work out. Does anybody else use it?

Re: Who uses beam blockers?

I have yet to gig with my current setup, but no, I do not.

I have seen them being used, but was to drunk to see if they made a difference.

Re: Who uses beam blockers?

I do but only on the bottom 2 speakers of my 4x12. Cabinet sounds dark so using them on all 4 didn't turn out so good. They work quite well the way I have them now.

Re: Who uses beam blockers?

I don't now, but we'll see how I feel about them when the Splawn arrives. I know they're a bit on the bright side.

Well, actually I might be the old-schooler who puts duct tape on the grill over the cones.

Re: Who uses beam blockers?

I made my own.....using a paper dust cap, like Weber does. I used them, then didn't, then used then on two out of four speakers, then on none. My new Bogner cab with all V-30's is very harsh and beamy.....I may try them one more time.

Please let me know how it works out for you. Yeah, I thought about the old skool method too but... :D

For those who use them, could you ever gig without a blocker again? :D Thanks for the input, guys.

Re: Who uses beam blockers?

Duct tape and strips of cardboard on one particular 1x12 rig that had a bit too much top end bite that I could not dial out for the life of me. It did the trick.

hmmmm.....

I will say that these improve the tone of my 4x12 but they aren't a necessity. If I could, I would use them. If not, I wouldn't throw a fit about it.

Re: Who uses beam blockers?

Strangesound youve got the screamer combo right? Is it advisable to use beamblockers when you're running through only one speaker? Might be something to consider because I think most folks use them with 4x12 cabs.

Re: Who uses beam blockers?

I'm considering installing a beam blocker in my '64 Ampeg, R-12R. It's tone is a bit bright. One day while letting a friend play through it, I put my hand over the center portion of the grill cloth and the amp had a smoother more well rounded tone. The brightness was gone. A beam blocker is on my to do list.

Re: Who uses beam blockers?

I might try them on my AC 30, Not sure yet though. Might do some gaff tape to see if I like it.

Re: Who uses beam blockers?

I don't, but I probably should. My main 212 cabinet doesn't focus for 25 feet and then it rips off heads.

Re: Who uses beam blockers?

I've considered trying them a bunch of times but always wind up buying other stuff instead.

Now I'd need a ton of the things for my rig..

Yeah, that's right. I changed the V30 for a Eminence Cannabis Rex, which smoothed out A LOT and makes the signal quite fat but the beam is still there. I'm considering to buy a closed 1x12 cabinet for the V30 someday.

So, I just installed it and loike it a lot. I have to turn up the presence or treble up a bit but this amp has plenty of it left, so it's all good. Can't wait to gig with it :)

So it sounds pretty good on a combo amp? Good to know, glad it worked out for you bro. Yeah the screamer has plenty of highs on tap. I usually run a flat EQ with the presence at about 3 or 4.
