Re: who uses no effects whatsoever?

Besides preamp and power amp I need a delay only in the live rig, very rarely a chorus pedal. For recording all the ambience comes from overboard units, signal is geetar > preamp > cab sim or power amp/ real cab.

Re: who uses no effects whatsoever?

no pedals= the secret to magic tone of the Youngs: Angus, Malcolm & Neil

Re: who uses no effects whatsoever?

**** if you have a gain knob on your amp that's an effect too!@

If you want to get technical, everything beyond the human voice is an effect, and then again, what about that rib cage?

I use an od or clean boost for a solo boost in some situations. In the past, I used od pedals for od on a clean amp such as a Twin. I have rarely used other pedals of any sort, and when I have, it has been a short lived experiment. Then again, Malcolm Young is my guitar hero...

Straight in is my preference, but I have made the occasional exceptions outlined above.

Re: who uses no effects whatsoever?

Clean Boost, Compressor, TS Clone, Low Gain OD, Low Gain OD, Medium Gain OD, Tremolo, Delay. I'd like to add another delay so I can have my solo delay and my slap-back delay and not have to constantly bend over and fiddle with my delay pedal.

Do any of your original signal's nuances make it through? From the looks of it, ~4-5 of those are on at any given time right?

Are you intentionally trying to process your guitars so hard it no longer matters what you play & just go for comfiest neck guitar you can find, regardless of how it sounds? Or is the cleanboost specifically for ramming the signal through that long chain, so it comes out recognizable?

Re: who uses no effects whatsoever?

For years I used nothing in between, now I have a treble booster (not really an effect) and a script Phase 90, which I kick in occasionally. Most of the time I play straight - my 'effects' are switching between pups and right hand dynamics.

Re: who uses no effects whatsoever?

Almost all of my effects are for live use I find.

For me, most of my effects serve a live purpose. At home, I never need a compressor, but when you're on a gig and you've been jumping or dancing around all night, adrenaline pumping, and you need to do a fingerpicking or clean part with all the sound being equal in volume and output, a compressor becomes necessary. Like I've said before, the compressor is a live effect.

Since moving countries I don't really have a proper gigging amp for myself, so I've had to resort to borrowing amps from the various bars and clubs that I play in, so I bought an overdrive that has a 'hot switch' so I can colour the overdrive sounds of some 'meh' amps, or make up for lack of an overdrive channel on some amps. I'm considering buying a DS-1 to play around with and mod for the same reasons.

The only effect that I use that isn't purely to help me out at a gig is my phaser, I just love that effect.

Re: who uses no effects whatsoever?

I've got a huge long chain if I want to do real effected looping type stuff. I also love to have a fuzz and delay available even if I don't use the full board.

However, every so often (like yesterday) I plug straight in and remember how much fun that can be!

Re: who uses no effects whatsoever?

ya, one good thing about pedals is you can turn em off! my pedals run through my Decimator Gstring pedal so all pedals off are taken completely out of the signal chain.

Re: who uses no effects whatsoever?

I use a ton when I am doing the ambient looping thing: lots of reverb, pitch-shifted and reversed, Ebow, and guitar synth. Echoes of 20 seconds or longer. I don't always want it to sound so 'guitar-y'. For more conventional playing, I can get by with reverb from the amp, but like overdrives, phasers and delay too.

Re: who uses no effects whatsoever?

I usually play with no effects. If I'm trying to cop the sound of a particular song I may use effects.

Re: who uses no effects whatsoever?

I grew up using no effects and I make sure that when I'm learning something new that I can play it clean (even without distortion).

Beyond that, I prefer an overdrive and a gate. Everything else is just gravy that I enjoy but don't necessarily need to enjoy the experience.

My clean tone is usually a pretty classic Fender clean with reverb. I have a compressor but it really depends on my mood if I use it or not. Sometimes I use it for quick funk chords and other times I just like the raw sound of my Strat for that very same type of playing.

Re: who uses no effects whatsoever?

Children of Bodom's Alexi Laiho, according to some silly youtube interview with him I watched this morning... just a JVM and "very very rarely, a stereo chorus, that's it".

Damn, I need to find me some new activities. Seriously, if I can rarely be arsed to listen to his music, why am I even watching interviews with him???
