Who uses the Pearly Gates set for heavier stuff?

I know the 59 set can cover a lot of ground as far as lower-output pups go, but how about the PG set? Jolly had a few heavy-sounding clips with the PG, but does anyone else use them for some heaviness?

Re: Who uses the Pearly Gates set for heavier stuff?

depends on how you'd describe 'heavy'. I can play queensryche with it, with ease. heavier than that, I don't play.

Re: Who uses the Pearly Gates set for heavier stuff?

I nailed some black metal tones with the PGb a while back, it can be done with the correct setup.

Re: Who uses the Pearly Gates set for heavier stuff?

As mentioned, I use them. It seems as I remember reading years ago that Anthrax used them on the Sound of White Noise CD.

Re: Who uses the Pearly Gates set for heavier stuff?

I can take a BB2 into Synphony of Destruction territory with a DSL100 dimed on the red channel OD1, bass boost on mid cut off (out). But it's loaded in a kick ass R0, so how much is guitar and how much is pickup?

I have another BB2 loaded in a chambered R8 that would never do the same. It can only do AC/DC, old Def Leppard, Tesla, etc.

The solid body R0 has punch, while the CR8 has an airy chimey tone.

I get a nice tight tone for thrash with the PG set in my explorer, My fav pup set of all time!

Re: Who uses the Pearly Gates set for heavier stuff?

Its really up to the amp. with a 5150 i can play any metal with jazz pup

Re: Who uses the Pearly Gates set for heavier stuff?

I play Zeppelin with PG's. I'd call that heavy.

The PGs in my Ibanez S420 (pic). Heavy? No problem. I'm a distortion dweeb, the pickups I choose should comply to my distortion needs, regardless of their inherent features (lower output/ weaker magnets/ etc.).

I use to use a PG set before I moved to BB Pros. They will bring the heavy if you have an amp to do the heavy lifting.

Re: Who uses the Pearly Gates set for heavier stuff?

I wouldn't play metal with pearly gates but for g n r songs there great, which would be a hard rock/metal band.

I have a PGn in my ES-335 and I use that guitar for punk/ stoner rock and the PG nails the tone I seek. It can get heavy, sweeps sound great and best of all, it doesn't get muddy.

Re: Who uses the Pearly Gates set for heavier stuff?

A modded A4/A8 "lowly" '59 set can play any kind of music. From Jazzy squeaky clean to the most obnoxious Metal Hardcore (having enough gain on tap).

The PG set would do the same and then some. Remember, the PG set arguably gracefully takes just about ANY Alnico mag swap known to mandkind.

HTH,

Re: Who uses the Pearly Gates set for heavier stuff?

Thanks guys. The guitar in question is my LP Custom. It's definitely punchy and a little on the bright side with the ebony board. It's about 14lbs, so it's probably solid. Ive been playing a little bit more low gain stuff lately, but still love to bring the heavies when needed. I have a few pedals for boosts if I need them, and my SLO project or even the JSX definitely has a little bit of gain, so Id bet it can do the lifting. ;)
