Whole Lotta Love

Not suire if this is the right forum, sorry if not. Ive been trying tirelessly for a while to get the tone that Jimmy Page has in his solo for Whole Lotta Love. What effects/pedels/settings would be ideal for getting this tone? normally i figure it out on my own but im stumped on this one. Thanks

Re: Whole Lotta Love

LP with a '59 going through a cranked fender champ. Boost the mids leave bass and treble at 5.

an old champ ain't got a mid control. ;)

although, that certainly is the basis of the forumula. Les Paul, vintage PAF-type humbucker, and a cranked tube amp.

Re: Whole Lotta Love

I know for a fact he used a wah pedal depressed downward, frank zappa style, with a les paul and either a supro or a vox cranked. It wasnt a marshall. I've got the guitarworld legends zep issue which has a great interview where jimmy talks about how he got some of his most famous tones.

it's pretty basic: old les paul, wah, cranked small tube amp

you're never going to sound exactly like the recording though, it's impossible. 50% of the sound on any of the zeppelin albums comes from the methods they used in the studio. Which is why you never really hear page live sound anything like he did on those classic recordings.

Re: Whole Lotta Love

Thanks a lot guys. and yeah i know ill never replicate the sound, im just shooting for being in the same ballpark. if i can come close i'll be satisfied. Thanks a lot tho

Re: Whole Lotta Love

I may be wrong, but I think Jimmy used a Telecaster on the first 2 LZ albums. Whole Lotta Love was on LZII wasn't it? If my memory is right he was using a Tele, Wah, some other studio effects and a Supro Amp.

Re: Whole Lotta Love

he did use a tele on nearly every album somewhere, including II. But on whole lotta love he used a les paul, not his famous 58' or 59', but a black beauty that got stolen sometime after II came out. He used that on a lot of his studio work in the 60's, he also used it live. You can see it on the led zeppelin DVD on the last few tracks of the first set.

I have a little brain damage. I meant if you were setting anther amp.

Re: Whole Lotta Love

Led Zep II was recorded over a year or so. Jimmy used a variety of amps and guitars. he probably doesn't even remember what he used.

Re: Whole Lotta Love

^i agree with this statement. there must be millions of threads on the net dealing with this topic. go check the gearpage for more info too. who knows who's right. ?? i guess the only thing we know for sure is that it's DARN GREAT TONE! ;)

Re: Whole Lotta Love

I remember reading he used a Supro amp alot.

A telecaster nails his recorded tone best- especially Communication Breakdown

Re: Whole Lotta Love

in an interview i believe Page says it is a Tele on the solo and an LP on the Rythym tracks

Re: Whole Lotta Love

These interviews are so funny. Sometimes the artist will say different things just to screw with the interviewer and readers, or for the sake of maintaining trade secrets. Joe Perry has done this in the past and admitted to it. I believe EVH has admitted to the same.

Even when you're getting your information from the horse's mouth, you may be getting misinformation. It's frustrating, which is just how some artists would have it.

OT: it must've felt great when Ritchie Blackmore said to the interwievers that the strap button in his guitars headstock is not there to add mass, but to get everybody think it is!

And yeah, Page has used much of different gear, but an LP with JP wiring and '59s or JP sig mics and wah thru overdriven amp with mids boosted is close, even for a track originally recorded with a Tele.

Over a year and some change actually, at several different studios. They used their touring gear for a lot of it... so probably a Paul & a Marshall... or an Orange.

The Supro was only on the first record & some later stuff like bits of 4...

Chances of any Telecaster on the second record are slim to none 'cause I don't think he was touring with one at the time.

Nobody's been able to cop that solo. Not even Page. Everyone always blows that insane middle lick...

Les Paul. Tube amp.

Lots of volume.

Record in the same room as the band. Embrace the bleed.

Woodshed. A lot.

There 'ya go.

Re: Whole Lotta Love

As mentioned, Jimmy Page used a smallish 50's or early 60's Supro amp (some say a Thunderbolt with a 15" speaker) and a Fender Tele. He miked it brilliantly! I've had the best luck getting that tone with a Tele with Fralin Blues Special pickups plugged into a MIJ Boss DS-1 into one of my '59 tweed Fender Deluxe amps.

My understanding is that he did a lot of distance miking -- placing a mic as much as four feet or more away from the amp -- which wasn't very common in those days. That mic, mixed with a close mic, would help him achieve the ambiance he was after.

My engineer, Charlie Davis, does the distance miking thing in conjunction with close miking too, and I like my current recorded guitar tone better than any other recorded tone I've ever gotten. Close miking alone just doesn't get any of the sound of the room. And close miking sounds just like you've put your ear about 3" from the speaker...who wants to hear that???? :11: Lew
