Who's replaced an OFR with a gotoh?

Re: Who's replaced an OFR with a gotoh?

The Gotoh anchor studs and posts posts are larger, so some routing needs to be done. They say that the Gotoh will work with the Floyd posts. I didn't like the Gotoh any more than the Floyd, except that it comes stock with a brass block ( on the thin side).

Re: Who's replaced an OFR with a gotoh?

My carvin has an ofr and the gotoh didn't fit the route.

basic retail Gotoh Floyd Licensed replacement unit?

afaik, Gotoh has like DOZENS of models, to different specs (although some are admittedly OEM for Ibanez etc., and others aren't clearly labelled as Gotoh to begin with though they are theirs), so discussing what fits/doesn't by just calling it "gotoh floyd" can be kinda moot.... one does, another doesn't. model codes, names or packaging pics/what the labelling said would help a lot.

Personally, I wouldn't get rid of an OFR for anything. Unless it meant a different guitar.

Obviously i am not talking about an ibanez or oem gotoh, I am referring to the current off the shelf gotoh gloyd rose. Which i believe are all the same minus blocks and nuts.

Re: Who's replaced an OFR with a gotoh?

After researching what Floyd was the best quality for a long freaking time, the general info I found pointed to Schaller being the best.

Mind you, its been over a year and a half since I looked into it.

I'd change what didn't like about the OFR before changing the entire trem, personally. I would think it would be cheaper.

Re: Who's replaced an OFR with a gotoh?

Piffle... The best floyd is a (non-floyd) Kahler.

Bar that, LoPro Edge original.

Re: Who's replaced an OFR with a gotoh?

You guys are useless. I wasn't planning on taking an OFR out and sticking in a Gotoh. I meant sticking a Gotoh in a hole that originally housed a Floyd.

It's all moot now because I'm taking the Floyd out of my Kelly (originally a JT580LP) and putting the Gotoh there and putting the Floyd in the guitar I was asking about. Seems like a better plan. As for dealing with the longer lock bolts I just so happen to have an extra set of OFR bolts and I checked them in my Edge and they fit, hahaha. I seriously watched a youtube video of a dude hacking a JS that came with a TRS-II because of the bolts, hahahahaha, oops.

Also, the Edge sounds and feels quite a bit different than an OFR, not better or worse, just different. And Kahlers...

Re: Who's replaced an OFR with a gotoh?

Yes. It will fit in the cavity just fine. I have changed out several OFRs for Gotoh units. I prefer the tone and feel of the Gotohs, and find them to be of a more consistent quality. If you want to use the Gotoh studs, you will need to drill the OFT holes, and the Gotoh mounts are slightly larger. Not a big deal.
