Is there no one in your locale capable of doing a set-up?

I ask because shipping your guitar back and forth across the country will probably undo anything the set-up would have accomplished (changes in air pressure, humidity, temperature, etc.)

yeah and i think it's a good idea to learn how to set up your guitar yourself...especially one you've started modifying and stuff. When you spend the time making sure every little thing is right on your instrument you sort of 'bond' with it and get the kind of attatchment needed to build your guitar's mojo up.

i'll never sell my strats 'cuz i've spent so much time fine-tuning every single screw hahahaha...

Very true. Climatic changes affect the set up on a guitar. This should be done locally. I also think that every guitar player needs to know the ins and outs of the instrument. Therefore, it's worth it to learn to do it yourself. If you have questions, there's a great search function here, there are a lot of knowledgable guys here, and if none of that helps, there are books you can buy that teach you just about everything you'll want to know (and the books cost less than having a tech do the setup for you.

+1 on the do-it-yourself. Pick up a copy of Dan Erlewine's book How to Make Your Electric Guitar Play Great. It's full of great tips & tricks, and suggestions for getting/making tools on the cheap.

Definitely pick up this book.

Here's the best part of trying it yourself. Since you only make small neck adjustments at a time, you're quite unlikely to screw anything up permanently. Then if you just can't get it set up the way you like, you can still take it to a local tech and get it done right. But in the process, you've learned a lot about your guitar and how it works. Dan's book isn't that expensive and there's a lot of other great knowledge in there as well.

This is exactly how I taught myself to set up my guitars. I started with a modestly priced guitar in my collection and just started experimenting with tips from the book. Now, I consider myself to be pretty darn good at it. You will be as well.
