Who's tried the Air Zone...

This seems like a cool pickup...lower output than the TZ, with a tighter bottom and a rounder top...

Might be a good contender for the strat HSS sweepstakes....:bigok:

Re: Who's tried the Air Zone...

It will be kinda huge in comparison to MOST strat singles
Depends on what you match it with.

it will make a strat sound big and nice. Decently open bucker, typical dimarzio high gain smoothness.

Re: Who's tried the Air Zone...

I had one in an alder body, maple neck Jackson DXMG and it sounds huge, no question here. As OlinMusic mentioned it sounds pretty open and is smooth under gain, it's more a singer than a screamer(that's mainly why i don't have it anymore). It does classic rock and most styles very good but imo it's not tight enough for metal, so i guess it depends on the style you wanna play. This thing has some cool harmonics and it's output isn't over the top and a little more controlable. Should warm up your strat nicely and has balls in it's tone.

Re: Who's tried the Air Zone...

It's a nice pickup, I used to have one in my Strat. Smooth but balanced, it has a HUGE lead sound. If you'd like more presence, tightness, and a slightly more aggressive sound, you can choose a Duncan JB or something similar instead. After a while I felt the Air Zone didn't have the tightness and cut I wanted for my riffs, but I still wanted a hot Alnico pickup, that's the reason why I changed for a Bare Knuckle Nailbomb (it's similar to the JB).

Re: Who's tried the Air Zone...

I have one in the bridge of my alder bodied, maple necked strat and I like it for classic rock and fusion type stuff. I've got a PAF Pro in the neck and I am really enjoying the combo. I also like the C5/'59 combo in my Hamer though :D.

Re: Who's tried the Air Zone...

I just put one in to my MIA Strat with a PAF in the neck. I really like the tone. My Strat still sounds like a Strat in the middle position but with more balls. The response is good, chords sound nice and fat, sustain is really good. I'm hitting Gary Moore type sustained notes like crazy (ask JeffB about it...lol). It took some retweaking of the EQ on my Marshall from what I'm used to but once dialed in, it blew me away with the tone coming out of the guitar.

So, um...does anyone have anything to add (constructively?)...lol

I liked the AZ a lot, it is really different from the TZ
it is tight and focused and sounds best in a bright axe
it has a singing lead voice and great harmonics
to me it sounds like a fatter JB
it is kind of like a cross between the JB and duncan custom
If you really need to hear one listen to EVH's stuff on F.U.C.K
that is pretty much what the AZ sounds like

Can you mod them like the Tone Zone, to match EVH's ?
