who's using 59/custom for heavier styles?

Re: who's using 59/custom for heavier styles?

Wow- that metal pick-up comparison was fantastic.

I actually thought my two favorites were the standard Blackouts and the 59/Custom.
They seemed to have a little of everything and not too much of anything.
I was really keying in on the riff(s) at the 0.15 through 0.17 second marker.

Yes. And the reason why is that the mismatched coils add more growl on open chords, which sounds nice and evil for metal. Think of pickups as tone shapers, while letting the gain of your amp and/or pedals to do all the gain. The 59 is a great rock pickup, and the C5 is a great rock/metal pickup. When combined, you get a nice balance of the two.

To be honest, the C/59 is one of the best sounding pickups out there. Most players that go through all the hot pickups, then all the vintage pickups end up liking the virtues of both types. The hybrid gives you both attributes in one pickup.

Great points by Gear - tha man!

I decided to install the 59/Custom and a 59 neck into my LP Standard and Rio Grande BBQ/Texas into my SG and will report back. I play classic rock to hard rock ancd grunge and amps are Dual Rectidfier, Bogner 20th Shiva and PWE Event Horizon.
What magnet is in the 59/Custom???

Keith decided to include it in his high-output demo's (which it doesn't really qualify for), but I did get several comments that it was some peoples favorite. For those that want to compare you can here:

Re: who's using 59/custom for heavier styles?

doing some reading on bachtorocks original hybrid thread. about a month ago i tried the custom screw coil with the JB slug coil with a ceramic mag and it totally kills!. It's in my LP and believe it or not, it is cutting but not harsh. It is very full on all frequencies and string separation is best ive heard yet in a pickup. huge tight bottom end like you would expect from custom with massive barre chord sound but great midrange growl and lead tone from the JB. It's not going anywhere. I do still want to try the custom/59. I can hear the sound that the mismatched coils give in this custom/jb. it gives some real grit and grind to the sound. Not unpleasant but a little rude sounding. I really dig it. I would expect the custom/59 to be similar but a bit toned down for different kind of voicing. I use the jazz/59 A4 in the neck. I love hybrids!
