I dont like the 59's too much with much dirt but, they are my favorite buckers clean. Radius the poles a bit and they work wonders.

and... pretty much every other legendary rock band i make it a point to learn kinda that guitarist's style

has made the stuff i write tons better, i don't resent guitar teachers so much anymore since i learned that

but anyways, yeah a set of 59's like... there isn't a tone out there you can't cop or make sound thicker & better, or twangier & better

The Jazz split really sounds like a strat neck. I use a Jazz bridge in the neck of one LP, which also has pullup tone knobs to split the coils. It's surprising to hear such a nice single coil tone coming from a Les Paul.

I use that goldtop LP as a testbed for new bridge humbuckers, but the Jazz B always remains in the neck position.

really like my 59n paired with a C5b ... very warm, smooth ... i wouldnt play too many distorted chords with it, no .. but for clean comping and almost any single note work, its a killer choice

I've just installed a 59n, and I'm not really satisfied, it sounds a bit thin to me, lacks bass, mids and output. So, I have some ceramic magnets laying around here and thought of maybe putting one in. Has one of you tried this for the neck version? How does it sound?

If you've got the 4-conductor lead sounds like you've connected the wrong color coded leads. Check it again.

And a ceramic magnet would make things worse, BTW.

no, I think Iconnected it right (I run two duncans in this guitar and the other is fine). I believe it sounds the way it should and I just expected something else, not that really my taste (never had a low output Pu in the Neck). So you think a ceramic would make the sound even thinner? Sry, I've never changed magnets before

+1. This is one of the best PU combinations for rock & blues. I use mine with gain & they sound great.

I still have a sh-1 '59 that I bought back in 1982! It's been in many different guitars over the years, but it currently resides in this home-made alder body "super Strat". I'm extremely happy with the clear, warm sound that it puts out. Great pick-up!

Not doubting you at all GJ, but I seem to get the strattiest split tones out of a JB, surprises me a bit that the Jazz neck has enough output split...

I've tried both the Jazz neck and the JB split (both in the neck and bridge), and the JB is definitely the strattier of the two split tones. However, the Jazz neck in parallel is very Strat-like as well, and is the best way to run that pickup in my opinion. After trying the Jazz neck in parallel, I never went back to the normal series setting. It's very warm and transparent, full of rich harmonics, and has almost as much output as the normal series mode.

I have an eary '80's 2-conductor 59 as well. I got it to go into my Strat backe when you still had to cut your own, and it served there for several years before it moved to my LP Studio, where it had just the perfect combination of guts and clarity. I never found it thin, but I've primarily used it in medium/dark guitars. It's my favorite if I don't need something as hot as a JB.

recheck the wires and your adjustment. It isnt a high output pup, but should be plenty gutsy and definately not thin. Some even say they are too bassy , so your lack of bass concerns me..



I have many 59s in the necks of guitars and dig them.. Several are 59Bs. I like that slightly hotter blues edge I get with them.

after playing with it a bit more, i guess it's not really the bass I'm missing. If I turn the highs way down and the mids up to 5 o clock, it sounds ok. But then my other pickup and guitar sound like crap. And it's still lacking output for me. So I think I'll put a Jb or something with lots of mids and more output there. :smash:

ok.. just making sure you were getting everything possible out of it.. Im with you there, I normally cant be satisfied with low output buckers in the bridge.
I do have a 59 with an alnico 8 in my Baretta and am trying to keep it.. the pup sounds great! Just like more horsepower..

Howdy,

My old ES-335 has a set. They sound great for everything from clean passages all the way to raucus roadhouse raunch. I'm a Keef disciple and recommend the '59 to anyone seeking vintage HBer tones.

PS: It's not uncommon for me to employ that 335 for "Honkey Tonk Woman".
