Why CRT monitors are a nono when recording!!

I am going ins(D)ane here....my LCD screen has been out since August...I am waiting for a stupid switchmode 12v DC supply!!!
How can that take so long???
Anyways I tested my SoSchall drive......but the screen kept driving me insane!!
That is the strange feedback you can hear near at the end, I just stuck the guitar real close to my monitor!!
CRT is nice but sucks for recording!!
:laugh2:
Strat with SSL-1's and a SSL-2, plus a dummy coil....not that it helps much against CRT screens:D

Re: Why CRT monitors are a nono when recording!!

I just turn mine off if I'm recording anywhere close to the monitor . . . but yeah, I feel your pain . . .

Re: Why CRT monitors are a nono when recording!!

So the LCD screens wont add any noise???

They do, but it's extremely quiet. Your computer's hard drive spinning adds more noise than an LCD screen.

Generally anything that uses electromagnets and/or inductor coils will make noise.

Re: Why CRT monitors are a nono when recording!!

That sounds quite funny, but the Les Paul makes noise too, so CRT is good for gaming, but is kinda bad for recording :)

When do you get the new Power Supply?

Btw. How does saturday sound for you, for fixing up the two pedals?

Re: Why CRT monitors are a nono when recording!!

yeah here in Arizona you gotta turn off your Air conditioning too...so no monitor and it's blazing hot!

Re: Why CRT monitors are a nono when recording!!

Sorry for being :offtopic: :D ....awesome tone..I'd like to check out the SSL pups :smokin:

Re: Why CRT monitors are a nono when recording!!

I have some more questions mr. Rid!!!

* Are you going to keep the dummy coil in place? how much does it change the tone in your opinion?

* Could you tell me how to wire the dummy coil up? (or anyone else for that matter)

* Do you wire it in series or parallel with the other pickups? In phase or out of phase?
Have you tried all the ways? which is best?

Cheers!

Edit - Got two more questions!

* What did you use for a dummy coil? Could i use an old bar magnet single coil that i've removed the magnet from?

* Where did you put the coil???

Re: Why CRT monitors are a nono when recording!!

Just thought of another question!

Is it possible to put in a switch to turn the dummy coil on and off? Therefore giving you the best of both worlds.......

I'm definately keen on this idea.

Re: Why CRT monitors are a nono when recording!!

Here you go with some of it!
Still not done hehe
I wired it in series with the other pickups, between the 5 way switch and the pot.
And as I had anticipated, the middle was humming and so did the inbetween settings as well, but that is ok, as I almost never use either with gain!
But I will have to dig up a nonreverse middle!

Re: Why CRT monitors are a nono when recording!!

aah yes, forgot about the reverse middle thing. dangit
Still be keen to see the wiring diagram...i cant visualise it

Re: Why CRT monitors are a nono when recording!!

It is just the wire from the 5 way switch to the volume pot:)
Nothing advanced, I use a 59n slugcoil right now, but I am looking for a small round coil, I think something with thin wire from a passive crossover might work!?

Re: Why CRT monitors are a nono when recording!!

the tv in my room makes it just like having a CRT monitor. which is annoying as hell. it also adds hum to my amp when its on.

Re: Why CRT monitors are a nono when recording!!

Ok, so let me confirm.....

5 way out ------ start of dummy coil -------end of dummy coil ------- volume pot

That it?
And if it is out of phase, just swap the start and end of dummy coil around?

And Are you going to keep it in place....worth it???

And where did you place the dummy coil

Re: Why CRT monitors are a nono when recording!!

That sounds aboot roight!
The hot lug of the volume, the right one of the three, if you see the pot from above and have all three lugs in front of you.
I keep it under the 5 way switch, alittle off from the switch actually, otherwise there is no room, I just duct taped mine until I have found the coil that works the best!

Re: Why CRT monitors are a nono when recording!!

don't put your guitar(specially if you have alnico pups) near a CRT monitor when turning the monitor on. most CRT monitors degauss(demagnetize) automatically when powering up.

Re: Why CRT monitors are a nono when recording!!

Have you gotten the refund for a new monitor yet?
