Re: Why do cutaway acoustics cost more?
strat-master: Taylor made a 314 C (no "E") for me and cut the price by over $100. Didn't seem to be a big deal for my local neighborhood music store to handle the custom order. I don't like having the EQ insert in the side of an acoustic guitar and had no need for amplification anyway.
As far as costing more, the bending needed for the cutaway is a whole lot trickier than the upper bout. Just take a look at the curves involved. Also, it may be harder to hide a sloppy neck joint with a cutaway.
