I just wish I could afford a Soldano or Mesa Boogie. Are there any amps out there of similar sound, but more affordable?

I think the 5150 series was designed by Soldano and covers the same territory. Also Yamaha had a series of tube amps during the 90's that were designed by Soldano.

The only problem is that every time I go to a music store, at least one of their Peavey amps are broken - no kidding. I just never had the experience to think they're reliable. I do think they can sound good though.

I tried the Satriani amp and it rocks, but I don't trust them. Maybe they're good, I don't know. I have been looking at these B52s though. Their tube amps seem pretty affordable and I've heard good things about them.

And every time you to go a guitar store all the mesas, marshalls, insert name here, are always broke.

Has nothing to do with reliability.

By any chance are you talking about guitar center or sam ash?

Interesting. Yes, in fact, I frequent Guitar Center. But I have been to other guitar stores too. I honestly have never seen anything but Crate, Behringer, and Peavey break.

I've owned Vox, Crate, Marshall, and a Peavey half-stack. I use only Vox now.

The guitarist in my band had a real-deal SLO. Not a hot rod, but the SLO. The drive channel sounds fantastic. Its the transformers, and military-spec components that they use I assume...the thing is built like a tank.

The only problem is that the effects loop is ONLY designed to work with super high end rack gear. Forget about using pedals in there.

And the clean channel is just eh. You're paying $3500 for an amp that has a "decent" clean. For that amount of money, I want an amp with a riDONKulous clean channel.

In order to get the clean channel really clean, you gotta hace the clean pre-gain low, and the clean master VERY high. Which causes volume jumps in the effects loop when you use it, because the FX loop gets its feed post-channel-master volumes.

He sold it, and got an Egnater Module head instead. Talk about GREAT tone, and versatile. Those eggys rip.

You know what always cracks me up?

....military-spec components as a positive term. The military is notorious for lowest bidder. I was there and dealt with a lot of electronics....funny isn't it.
