Jeff, although I agree with you at a certain level, there's something you left out of that calculation.....your time. How long did it take you to assemble it and get it exactly the way you wanted it and how much is your time worth? Factor that in the cost too. I bet you'll find the actual total with man hours added to be closer to those of a few Fender Custom Shop guitars.

Actually it was really, really easy Erik. I sent the raw body, neck and hardware off to KCMguitars, and it came back fully finished, assembled and harware installed. All I had to do was install the pickups on the pickguard and string it up. It was about as easy as anything I've done. I would have changed the pickups anyhow, even on a custom shop guitar from Fender.

All of that, for just over a $1000...and I have a 100% nitro finish and all the best hardware and pickups you can get, IMO of course.

All I'm saying is that for my $$, this is a far superior way to go, to get exactly what I want. It may not be for everyone, and that's totally cool.

You done good then, bro. Didn't realize that he put the hardware on and assembled it too. I was just pointing out the one detail that many leave out when they spec a guitar like that, that's all. :)

I hear you, and wasn't trying to be argumentative at all...if I came across that way I apologize.

That is a detail that usually gets overlooked. However, I generally find that when talking about this subject, people are willing to put in their time for the love of the project, and not really look at it as a cost. However, from a TRUE cost analysis, you do have to figure in cost of time for assembly. I just got really lucky, and Ken is a FANTASTIC guy to work with.

True, the majority of the time it is for the love of the project. I got lucky too when I put mine together. The guy I bought the body from I also worked with at the store. He helped me get the rest of the stuff and even helped me put the neck, bridge and tuners on. Warmoth didn't drill the neck holes at that time so we had to line it up and mark 'em, then drill 'em. Same with the bridge holes, though it's a Chandler body. It was my first "real" non-plywood guitar, and only my 3rd electric, so he was really cool about it and was as excited as I was sometimes. I can't believe it was 13 years ago, and it still has no logo....LOL.

The guy who originally had my P-bass built from scratch (no pre-made wood parts) also ordered a Fender-decal on the headstock. I think it's a pity, I'd rather have the name of the luthier on the headstock. That's nowhere to be found as is now.

The USACG neck on my "strat" sports my last name as a logo.

Because regardless of how much they all praise the unbelievable quality levels of their parts manufacturers, they still wish it was the real deal.

Possibly for the same reason people will hot rod the hell out of a Mustang or Camaro yet leave the outside completely stock, a "sleeper" if you will. People glance at it and think nothing of it until it blows them away in the quarter mile, or to get back on topic, until they hear/play it.

it looks right with a decal.. i myself wouldnt put a fender logo on it..

i got a modified charvel import logo somewhere around here, which i'm gonna use, if i ever get around to ordering the neck for my fusion =P
someone who knows their charvels will instantly know it's not original.. and it's not like i'll ever sell this guitar hehe
