Jeff, although I agree with you at a certain level, there's something you left out of that calculation.....your time. How long did it take you to assemble it and get it exactly the way you wanted it and how much is your time worth? Factor that in the cost too. I bet you'll find the actual total with man hours added to be closer to those of a few Fender Custom Shop guitars.
Also, I do think my neck from Warmoth, my body from Musikraft, my hardware from Callaham, my pickups from SD and my nitro finish from KCMguitars for right at $1000 total cost is far superior to anything Fender could build/assemble for anywhere close to that pricetag. If you really stop to think about it...it's sad. Fender should be able to whoop anyone's arse when it comes to building a strat....dollar for dollar. I'm not talking about Custom Shop guitars...unless they start selling those for $1000.
