Why do so many people have huge amps?

Re: Why do so many people have huge amps?

I once sat down with a piece of paper and wanted to make a plan how to simulate (with a program) a guitar speaker, with it's fluffy paper cone that changes shape all the time and the undersized magnet that gets saturated constantly. Haha. Yeah, just a frequency response curve might not do it.

Re: Why do so many people have huge amps?

I use a big amp because mine has this special feature called a volume control. If I need more volume to suit the stage I turn it clockwise a bit. If I need less volume I turn it counterclockwise. At no point with the amp was I ever at a loss to find the prefect volume for the situation.

See I don't have the luxury/desire of owning and maintaining several expensive amps that will break up at jeeest the right volume for the room. And I don't have a crew carrying all that stuff. Plus even if the amp you used at "Greasy Bob's BBQ Palace" worked well for one gig, things could change and now the same venue requires more or less power. However because I thought I knew what amp to bring I'm now screwed. So I learned long ago how to use these magic little boxes you put between your guitar and amp that will cause just the right amount of crunch no matter what the volume and leave the power tube break-up for special occasions. Makes life easier and after 20+ years nobody's ever really noticed the difference.

Oooh... Colour me enamoured already, then! Her music any good, or is she best left to making cool posed posters?

The first 0:38 seconds are an intro off the album version. At :38 it cuts to live footage.

Listen on a system with good bass, otherwise you'll loose the entire groove.

Re: Why do so many people have huge amps?

This would be my intro to Boris, in which Wata is the main guitarist.

It's her and Liz from Electric Wizard. In a kiddie pool full of jello.
Liz is blasted out of her mind and laying on the edge of the pool and jello is dribbling out and Wata is still fully clothed and staring impassively at the slide.
This is not a very sexy dream.

I can't stand E-Wiz. Way too much of the same damn thing. If I want repetition to the nth degree I'll listen to Meshuggah.

yea, totally agree. There's three songs that that standout from them for me, and I listen to them sparingly. It's the same with The Sword; permutations of a detuned open chord and blues scales. The first 100 times they hit that octave power chord off the low string it's great though.

Re: Why do so many people have huge amps?

Definitely. Doom metal gets super boring after a while - almost enough so to make me wish I'd never started my doom band.

Re: Why do so many people have huge amps?

I like not having to kneel down to adjust the amp all the time.

But an AC30 is still just as capable of making someone clench their chest. When I played one on "10" I was able to feel the soundwaves blowing on my pant-legs. That thing can move some air.
So it may but it will never sound the same as two quad boxes.

dont say that!!!!!!!!! make it a SPANISH doom band then. and wear mariachi outfits!!! and play santana licks. SPICE THINGS UP :headbang:

Re: Why do so many people have huge amps?

If you want to just sit in front of the TV & play get a pod and headphones. If you want to get an amp that you can gig with you will need a minimum of 25 to 30W. If your wife & kids can't deal with it, get rid of them...

The only problem I have with them is they never change key. The Presidents of the USA collectively had 5 strings and changed key. Even KISS changes key, for gods sake. KISS.

Re: Why do so many people have huge amps?

Tell that to Jimmy Page - he recorded Zep 1 with a Supro.

Or the guys in the Eagles - Fender Deluxes.

etc

Nothing wrong with big amps (I've got a 50w and have owned 100w's in the past), but
let's not forget the contributions to recording history/legend the "little amp" has provided.

Not only that, but they really shine for recording because you can crank em and everyone's
ears are relatively happy as well as the mic.

Small amps are great in the studio or for practice I have a 13 watt tube amp I love, but live there is nothing like moving air.

Sonic Youth w/ more drugs?

Sonic Youth w/ more drugs?

I think they got their style from Kyuss and Sleep but sort of took a left turn at the Silk Road and ended up where they are now. It's sort of like Dir En Grey as compared to your standard extreme metal/death metal bands. Odd.
