Why Do we Still Need Cables?????

Think about it; does the person on the other end of your cellphone really sound like they're standing in the room beside you?

I wonder how much of that is the limitations of microphone and speakers of that size?

Granted to make very good points about the differences between analog and digital signals/technologies which is part of it. Not to mention the type of stuff that gets passed through might be different

I guess my problem is that sometimes I think of something and immediatly think "damn why doesn't this exist", without considering feasibility (or spelling)

Re: Why Do we Still Need Cables?????

Bluetooth is a Digital wireless system, used in say Wireless Keyboards, Mice (not the animal kind), monitors etc ... I don't know if they've moved it over to cellphones etc yet or not. Bluetooth has been around for what 4-5 years now? I seem to remember it being new when I was in high school or somehting like that

Re: Why Do we Still Need Cables?????

I got another thought...

Given how many guitarists obsess over true bypass, who's gonna trust their tone to an air gap?

Yeah they have Bluetooth on Mobile Phones now :)

It's mainly used so people can exchange photo's, ringtones etc between their phones without costing them the price of a text/multimedia message (Bluetooth transfers are free).

OK, cables it is! Now, I'm starting to understand why they've spend the last 10 years perfecting cables to a ridiculous degree........they've long ditched the idea of wireless.

Re: Why Do we Still Need Cables?????

i was thinking about this thread again and was wondering...i know your talking about wireless everything cables etc but when will someone make a guitar wireless that works well and honestly sounds like a cable...i have tried 4 of them so far from $300-500 and all had quirks i didn't like. what do the pros use?

I don't care why...I HATE wireless, period! You guys will have to pry my Geoprge L's out of my dead hands!

+1. wireless has it's problems: dropouts, interference,etc.

As long as the batteries are good...

Which is why I'll stick with cables for the time being, thanx. ;)

Re: Why Do we Still Need Cables?????

+1 for the "why do we still use tubes" comment. Just cos something is new, don't mean it's better, IMO.

Thats what I was gonna say. They don't mount Nuemen U87's in cell phones. :laugh2:

Its the acoustic couplers, both mic and speaker, that account for the fidelity issues. A wireless guitar system could be direct-coupled into a 96khz, 32-bit D-A convertor easily.

You'ld still have to work out all the bandwidth and frequency sharing problems, though.

Whether or not it is common knowledge, guided missles use tubes.....anyone want to take a wild guess why?....

Since no one else did, I'll say Electro Magnetic Pulse. The bazillion tiny little ICs on which we depend daily will all get fried when the first nuke goes off, but the 2nd, 3rd and 4th nukes will still be flying.

And my Marshall will still be rockin'. Of course, the electric utilities are all computer-controlled, so there will be no electricity to run it, but that's their fault, not mine.

So, if I get a lttle Honda generator, I can keep playing right through the apocalypse. The gas stations will all be shut down, but I can keep running nearly indefinitely by siphoning the gas out of all my neighbors' Suburbans and Tahoes, which will have no need for gas since their sensors and engine controls will all be fried, too.

Sounds like a plan. Or am I off-topic?

Maybe if they weren't so pre-occipied making gear that looks and sounds EXACTLY like an instrument made five decades ago they could fine the time to come up with something.

Since they haven't been able to better them, maybe reproducing them isn't such a bad thing....................

Yes, but aren't quality AD and DA converters still running up around the $400-$500US/set range?
