Why do you buy new instead of used?

Re: Why do you buy new instead of used?

My #1 is my Westbury deluxe my mom bought used back in '81. My brother tested it out and said it was better than his guitar and that was enough for me to want to take it home.

One of my strats was a return at GC, I think it $400 dollars less the than the original price. Changed the pg+ out and put on black pickguard and pu covers and started gigging with it. Couldn't figure out why it was returned in the first place.

My McCarty had been on the wall at GC for 2 or 3 years. The strings were dead and it had a couple of dings. But they wouldn't go lower than $200 off. One day they had a clearance and knocked the price from $2300 down to $1539. I took the leap. Then ran home put a fresh set EB 10's on, and couldn't believe the tone and sustain I got.

Most of my guitars are new cuz if I find something that moves me I'll take it home. That also goes for used. Most of my guitars are still stock. Tonepro's are bout all that's installed. Unless a pu fails(i.e. my Gibson classic antique), I'll work a guitar to the best of it's ability.

I read an old Guitar Player where Clapton said you can tell when someone great has played a guitar. Maybe that's why some used guitars have mojo that makes you want to buy it and play.

Oh, I forgot! I bought two Epiphone Les Pauls brand new that stunk and one used one that was great. I got the two new ones from Musician's Friend at different times, both were the wine red color. The really good one was honeyburst. Maybe it's all in the color. :naughty:

I had a new one in trans amber and couldn't ask for a better Les Paul.

Re: Why do you buy new instead of used?

I rarely buy new, simply because very few stores have decent lefthanded instruments in stock here. The only exception among my current guitars and basses is my 2008 Rickenbacker 4003. I was able to buy that new in the UK in January, when the British Pound was at an all time low compared to the Euro (I know some Americans tend to call it the 'Euro-Dollar', but it is really just called the Euro ;) ). I got the Ric at 2/3 of what it would cost me here. Oh, and two cheap acoustics. All my other guitars and basses were bought secondhand, either on eBay or on Dutch advertisement sites.

For me, it's the opposite...I rarely buy used because so few nice left-handed guitars come up for sale (cf. ratherdashing and j9fd3s). I won't buy a guitar sight unseen...hence, no non-local purchases...there's simply too much variability in guitar quality, even amongst the same model.

The only exception was my Tele (a used custom shop model, with pickups hand-wound by Seymour!), which I did buy used at a local shop, but that was 10 years ago. I have nothing against buying used, but I rarely get the opportunity.
