Why do you have so many guitars?

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

Because they all sound different, and I love the distinctive tone each gives. And, because I'm 45, have a good income and can afford it -- 25-30 years ago, I only had one and it was a pawn shop piece of crap my parents bought me when I was 13. Life certainly gets better as one gets older.

It may get richer. I don't think it gets better. Better is being able to pick up young chicks at will. Thats better and Im afriad its not too easy for the 99th percentile of us old flatulants that don't have 200 million or so dollars laying around to impress the young girls with. .

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

I have an Acoustic that I keep in the trunk of my car, Its for jamming with friends. I have a nice electric and tube amp that I use for gigs and serious jamming. I have a bass and bass amp for my bass stuff, and I have my home built strat and transistor amp for sketchy jams where I don't want to take my nice gear.

I'm set up for life...

Yeah right..

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

I have so many because of an unhealthy addiction.

Seriously, I have 1 main axe(prs ce24), my 2 humb guitar(Gibson LP studio) as a back up, a strat, a tele, a godin, a acoustic and a classical.

I have all of them to cover as many sounds as possible.

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

To be honest, I only have about three main sounds or so. I like my humbucker-humbucker guitars. I could probably sell off two of my three main guitars and be perfectly fine. But I friggin love every one of those guitars. The difference in sound between my les paul, my singlecut, and my mccarty is pretty **** slight...so usually it just depends on what I'm in the mood for in terms of feel. Do I want something light on my shoulders that's extremely well balanced? I go for the McCarty. Do I want a solid chunk of wood with a silky-smooth neck that's not too heavy to be uncomfortable, but heavy enough to have a profound "presence"? I go for my Singlecut. Do I want something a little more rough and slinky feeling? I go for my Les paul.

Nowadays...though...I'm looking at a singlecut tremolo. God help me.

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

I buy them so others can't "relic" them.

More:

I have no children.
I have a good job.
I work hard, I deserve them.
My wife let's me, as long as the bills are paid.
I don't buy junk, most guitars I buy will either hold their value or go up in value.
I'm not addicted to any chemicals.
There's a lot worse thing to be addicted to!

I only have five and play three of them regularly. The other two are really not worth selling. Each has a distintive feel and tone. Now I just "need" a P-90 equiped guitar, an HB equiped LP or something similar, and a Jazzmaster, and a baritone ..... and that's all I need.

and the red Strat with black pickguard and controls I saw yesterday at GC

and another Hamer to replace the one I "lost" ..... that's all I need.

and maybe one high end guitar like a Suhr, but that will be the last one.

and just one Abyss guitar with the intricate inlays and then I'll be happy.

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

I've bought and sold guitars since 1977. I'm not very good at playing guitar but I love guitars. I started keeping them more than selling them in the mid '80s. Some folks collect art, bulid a '70s Muscle car, or have a boat. Me, I buy guitars. I consider them to be my "boat" or "hot rod" or "Harley". It has nothing to do with impressing others although the rush of the "nice guitar" and " Cool Wood combo" can be addicting to some. Myself included at times I'm sure. Many of you know as well as I do the smile you get when someone posts a REALLY nice guitar. It's a great hobby for some and business for others. I'm not sure why some players get irritated more about somebody owning a bunch of guitars more so than others. I'm thinking the biggest feeling might start at envy. Could be like you're like myself, I'm single with no kids, no exwife(s), or real bills. So I can spend money there that otherwise is needed to feed, house, and supply a family. There ya go, Guitar fund. Only in the last couple years have I bought anything that was over $750. Having a buncha guitars is NOT equal to having a family by no means. Guitars are just my "thing".

YMMV.......

Amen! There is so much to choose from these days, at reasonable prices, and its so easy to get them used online. And all the after-market PU's & accessories. This is too much temptation for middle-aged guys with a decent income who've always loved electric guitars. At least these have a resale value, unlike a lot of things we could be spending our money on. My wife's learned to live with it.

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

well in my case i think it's 2 things...

1-i had a fondness for buying fixer uppers... i'd walk into a store and the staff knew what i was looking for... Sometimes they held onto used wrecks until i walked in... techs used to sell me parts for cheap, necks, PU's , bridges, Bodies... I had friends that worked at suppilers like Peavey at one time... i was a sucker for other mans trash and i still am... i love it!!! I make working axes out of junk a fair bit... only trouble is i'm out of room now...

2-another reason i have so many is back when i was 19 i sold off everything i owned... i had this dream of buying a Marshall or Hiwatt stack and a Les Paul... I fell on hard times and went 2 years almost without an axe or the money i had recieved from selling everything... Oneday i was talking to my boss at work about how bummed i was i had no guitar... he was a retired soundman and understood what i meant... he loaned me the cash to buy a used Les Paul on the spot! I still own it but it's a wreck as well... Anyways ever since that time i decided that i would buy 1 guitar per year... and so far that has pretty much been the case... it's been about 19 years since i bought that LP and i have over 22 solid bodies...

If you really believe that then I'd say your values are pretty skewed, in which case, your life will probably never get better. FWIW, you don't need to have 200 Mil to have a good life -- good health, a decent income, family and friends will give you an awfully full life, and a much more meaningful measure of success than how many chicks you've bagged.

There's no use trying to reason with Jerry man -- he never got a chance to really enjoy any 'female company' until he was way into his 30's and finally started paying for it. He just wishes he had done the young local rock star thing like the rest of us :lmao:

I have the guitars I have 'cuz they're all different and awesome. My Strat sounds really Fendery and my SG sounds really Gibsony and uhh yeah. The Warmoth is somewhere in between.

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

I Love guitars as much or maybe more than a lot of other guys here do. I am fortunate that I can afford a lot of gear. I have almost 30 guitars, but I must say I play most of them. I have a Tacoma Archtop and an Alvarez classical that I don't play that much, but all the others I really do play.

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

because people give them to me, and i refuse to sell them reguardless of how junky they are. However i have given away 2 basses and traded my friend a cheap charvel strat with a johnson neck, for a Regal solid state 2x10 combo i turned into a 2x12 cab. Other than that i only play 7 of the 12 or so

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

It's turned into a collection hobby. I enjoy doing the research on a new piece of gear (or guitar), buying and playing. I just make sure that anything I buy now is "gig-worthy".
