Why do you have so many guitars?

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

I have five and I want a whole bunch more.

Why?

Because I want to!

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

for a while i had 30+ guitars, i really dont need that many so now im down to maybe 15 or so?

i like variety and none of them sound the same, so even though i have four or five strats they are all quite distinct.

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

I have 6 instruments, but I need just one more.
I have 51 pedals, but I just need one more, really.
I have 5 amps, but I only need one more.

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

I Love guitars as much or maybe more than a lot of other guys here do. I am fortunate that I can afford a lot of gear. I have almost 30 guitars, but I must say I play most of them.

Isn't it great having a guitar for every situation, every kind of music you play, every mood your in? It's a nice feeling. I could never go back to having only one guitar. You play differently on different guitars, and rotating them keeps you fresh.

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

One is too many...a hundred is not enough.....there is no reasoning with this addiction.

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

I only have five and play three of them regularly. The other two are really not worth selling. Each has a distintive feel and tone. Now I just "need" a P-90 equiped guitar, an HB equiped LP or something similar, and a Jazzmaster, and a baritone ..... and that's all I need.

and the red Strat with black pickguard and controls I saw yesterday at GC

and another Hamer to replace the one I "lost" ..... that's all I need.

and maybe one high end guitar like a Suhr, but that will be the last one.

and just one Abyss guitar with the intricate inlays and then I'll be happy.

"...And that's it and that's the only thing I need, is this. I don't need this or this. Just this ashtray. And this paddle game, the ashtray and the paddle game and that's all I need. And this remote control. The ashtray, the paddle game, and the remote control, and that's all I need. And these matches. The ashtray, and these matches, and the remote control and the paddle ball. And this lamp. The ashtray, this paddle game and the remote control and the lamp and that's all I need. And that's all I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one - I need this. The paddle game, and the chair, and the remote control, and the matches, for sure. And this. And that's all I need. The ashtray, the remote control, the paddle game, this magazine and the chair..."

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

My wife's learned to live with it.

HA! My wife's had to do the same thing! She's been great about it, though. When I built my third guitar and bought my fourth, she shook her head and asked how many guitars I needed. She couldn't understand why I needed more than one -- after all, she "only has one piano", and you can only play one guitar at a time. She's learned to be a good sport about, though! I wonder what she's gonna say when I buy that Mojave amp in a couple months?

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

Cuz its part of my additiction to tone and music and gear...

The key is to have enough guitars & amps coming in & going out that there's no way she could possibly keep track of them. Be sure to sell a few things once in a while, so that the collection is a moving target. When you get a new one, you can say: "Oh that? I've had it for a while, don't you remember." If you do get something unusual that even she can see is new, you can say that you sold something else to get it.

This works for anything that you collect. Reach the point of complete confusion on her part and you've got it made. They stop fighting it & give in to the inevitable. After thinking it over, they'll be glad you're not drinking and chasing other women. After all, you're making an "investment", unlike all those shoes & purses of hers that aren't worth anything used. At least you're being practical about it.

Yeah, I've used all those "techniques". Funny thing is, she doesn't really notice things. I'll pick up something new and it'll be 3-6 months before she notices that I've gotten something new. She's not a ditz -- she owns and runs her own corporate consulting business and makes quite a bit of money doing it. Last month, I had my son's paintball gun and accidentally shot the ceiling as I was starting to break it down. I was going to clean it right away, but instead I bet my kids that it would be at least three months before she noticed the big pink splotch on the white cathedral ceiling. So far, I'm winning...

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

I started "collecting" when I was about 23. Now, my exwife could probably tell you to the exact number how many I have, but it's really only about 20. They all have their own voice and I bought for a reason, even though it may be difficult to remember what that reason was now (that '85 V is a good example!). I don't think I have too many, but I really don't have any cause to buy more at the moment.

You say, "...honey, I heard VOICES!!!!!"

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

Different ones for different purposes or different styles of playing. Also, different tones and different bond with each one. I only have 3 guitars right now, but I can easily see myself having 10-15 guitars by the time I turn 21.

Besides, guitars (at least well-made ones) are amazing and beautiful instruments that deserved to be acquired, played and loved.

What difference does it really make, if it wasn't guitars it would be some other hobby/passion/sport that you'd pour your money into to try to gain satisfaction, music is just the best way of going about it, and the guitar is a great tool for musical expression. Why blow $800 on a set of titanium golf clubs when you could buy a piece of art and engineering, a solid workhorse and rock machine, and create something instead.

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

I previously said "because I can," and that's true because

a) I'm single, and while in some ways that's not at all rewarding, it does afford me the opportunity to buy gear without having to answer to a significant other.

b) I work hard for my money. While I try to be a good guitar player and musician, I also know that guitars are a hobby of mine, perhaps my only remaining hobby. So money to spare often goes toward my hobby.

I've got a nice overtime check coming in a couple weeks, and if yesterday and today are any indication, the one after that will be nice as well. I think it's time to add to the collection, as it's been over a year since I bought a guitar, or parts for that matter.

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

I've only got two electrics and one acoustic. I don't see myself having many more guitars than that honestly. These three cover all the sounds that I need

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

I've got 5 electrics, one acoustic and a bass. Of those, I take one on tour, the same guitar I've played for 27 years, with the exception of the year I tried to like a PRS Custom, which I sold. I don't even take a spare on the road these days, and have been known to change the odd string onstage. I have no interest in having a room full of guitars, although I would enjoy playing a 60's 335 if I had one. My one workhorse guitar is such a loyal friend, and has recently had a new lease on life with a first class refret.

Cheers..................................wahwah

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

i only have 1 electric and 2 acoustics...

what i would "like" to have...

My Schecter PT/Saturn whatever you call it!

A Les Paul...i'd like something with some birdseye in it, although Rootbeer has always intrigued me?!

A nice Strat...like an EJ or G&L Legacy!?

A nice Tele...like a Nocaster or maybe an American Deluxe?!

A Ric...i'd settle for a 330 even!?

Something with P-90's

A 12-string Taylor

Gibson Hummingbird or Dove

And throw in one of those Campbell Dusenberg's and i'm all set!

You're off to a good start young man. There's nothing wrong with a guitar addiction. I wish I would have had the sense to own 10 guitars at that age. The more you own, the more you learn about them, especially if you do your own set ups & re-wiring. You can't put a price tag on that hands-on experience.

Re: Why do you have so many guitars?

I have a Les Paul that I use for anything heavy.

I have a G&L ASAT that I keep tuned to open G.

I have a Strat that is my jack of all trades.

I have a Tele that I keep tuned standard.

I have a Kramer Focus that was my first real guitar (1986/87).

I have an SG Classic that gives me great P-90 classic rock tones.

Still need that Ric 4001 bass, and maybe a Gretsch. :)
