Why does the poly on my strat chip so easily?

I noticed this recently, It's happened a few times but today I barely bumped into a music stand and I got a big poly mark on the bottom of the guitar. Like the polyester is breaking up really easily. It cracks all around where I hit. Is this because its thin or thick or what? I've only had one guitar that was nitro and many that have been poly. I've never had a poly guitar do this... they are usually pretty bulletproof.

I have an old thin poly finish dimarzio body from the 80's. Its abetter quality finish compared to most thick poly finishes , but doesn't do waht yours is doing, but does exhibit some chips.
Call Fender , this doesnt seem to be normal for a Fender body..are you sure its genuine?

it actually sounds like nitro..

Poly is more flexible than that..

Nitro gets brittle about 2 weeks after its sprayed on, it shatters like glass.

There are always guitars that "resist" the paint. I dunno whether that is just individual pieces of wood that have some natural property or whether somebody screwed up something in production.

When that happens nitro flakes off in large qualitities. Poly holds together on it's own, it doesn't need to adhere to the wood at all so to speak. But if you crash it it cracks easily and nothing is holding the new piece on the guitar.

Some Music Man instruments are susceptible to this. Ever spotted a used Bongo bass with no paint chips missing from the headstock?

hah. Brian Straub.AKA BrianS. AKA IDSNOWDOG...:biglaugh:

Thats right. Some guitars have that issue of the Op. I had a Ibanez with a big thick poly coating that most of them I saw chipped off of or had big cracks. It was a Talman.
