Why doesn't Fender use this method to relic their guitars?

Re: Why doesn't Fender use this method to relic their guitars?

I'm with EP. That guitar wasn't relic'd. It just had the paint burned off.

Re: Why doesn't Fender use this method to relic their guitars?

Don't like it.

Looks just like what it is, some amateur's silly experiment gone wrong and he couldn't get back out of the hole. Fail.

Re: Why doesn't Fender use this method to relic their guitars?

Relic'd was what it already was. The red had dings and some damage here and there. The final product was just...hell I dunno..."natural"?

Re: Why doesn't Fender use this method to relic their guitars?

Seems to me this isn't so much like a conventional relic job, but more like a DIY re-finish job.

Came out nice, if ya ask me.

x2, I think it looks cool. And there's nothing artificial about it - that guy actually set his guitar on fire.

Re: Why doesn't Fender use this method to relic their guitars?

yeah i mean -- at least he gave me ideas for quickly removing poly finishes.

my luthier friend uses a heat gun an a metal scraper to take off poly finishes and he says it takes hours and he charges around $200 to get it done...maybe i'll show him this 'method' and see what he thinks hahaha

Re: Why doesn't Fender use this method to relic their guitars?

I like it alot. I wouldn't say it's a relic, just woodburned. It looks like some 200 year old furniture or bartop- which is great if you're going for that look. Joe Perry has a guitar made by RS Guitarworks out of Warmoth parts that was meant to look like an old Winchester repeater rifle.

I'd age the parts a bit more, get a metal pickguard and blue it like an old rifle. I'd even try to blue the stock chrome

It would be interesting to try to do the neck.

Re: Why doesn't Fender use this method to relic their guitars?

The before looks pretty cool after looks terrible! i officially hate it!

Re: Why doesn't Fender use this method to relic their guitars?

I actually like it. Heres why
I think it looks better than the peavey tele I have with its poly finish. Bet it would sound better as well.
I have often thought of just taking a sander to the top of that thing!

Wow, that dude dropped the ball on. that one. Extra falso y homosexual.

Seriously, if you want a seriously relic ax go down to a prawn shop, get an old guitar that's been gigged, gotten beer spilled on, seen naughty stuff, and been cheered/boo'd off stage.

IMHO relic guitars are like guitars for the guy who needs a piece of furniture for his study, and rides a Harley on the weekends and a Lexus M-F.

Fail. :scratchch

Am I the only one who thinks it looked more like a relic before? I mean, it has dings on the edges, the paint is starting to become dull, it looks played, etc? The after pic just does not look as ''relic'' as the first, which is ironic to me.

I'm doing a relic job on my car at the moment.

Re: Why doesn't Fender use this method to relic their guitars?

Kind of sad that he burned it up, I thought it was a nice lookin guitar before

Re: Why doesn't Fender use this method to relic their guitars?

i had a Kramer in the 80's i messed up on painting with spray cans... like a lot of players of my generation we got the idea from EVH... but the car paint cans i used never hardened up... so oneday i was planning on stripping the gunk off it and pored thinner over it... just being a dumb ass i lit it up in the back yard... it burned high and fast for a few minutes and i turned the hose on it...

to my surprise it hardened the paint and i left it!!! LOL...

Yup. Before it actually looked like it had been played out a lot. Now it just looks like a Tele-shaped chunk of a tree that no one bothered to do right.

Extra falso y homosexual.

hahahaha!!

Re: Why doesn't Fender use this method to relic their guitars?

I wouldn't call it a relic really but that is a cool result and like he said with all the multiple layers of paint off it really opened up the guitar in terms of tone.

Easiest way to get a worn in feel on a guitar though? Get an unfinished neck with some oil/wax on it like the EB/Music Man necks. After a while it'll feel better then an 18 yr olds tits ;)
