Why Doesn't Gibson Make Any String-Through Body Models?

Re: Why Doesn't Gibson Make Any String-Through Body Models?

Sure, I don't mind showin' her off at all! They are very underrated guitars and can be had for cheap ($200-$500). I added a black/cream/black pickguard and had a matching trussrod cover made out of the same material. It's also got a TonePros TOM and tailpiece. I originally had a JB in there, but changed it to a zebra DD. I think it pulls the whole thing together as well as sounding bad a$$. I've got a set of chrome locking Grovers waiting to go on as well..

It's a mini-switch for coil tapping. It's standard on all the SG-Xs.

Re: Why Doesn't Gibson Make Any String-Through Body Models?

I could go either way, it depends on how you wire it.

I have not seen one, I doubt they do. I've seen ebony, solid brown, trans burgandy, yellow, pink, surf green, and orange.

I had a cherry red SG-Z in the mid 90’s. First thing that I did was to fit it with a traditional stop tail piece and remove all of the black hardware. Lovely guitar, (one piece body, ebony fret board) never did quite get used to the 24 fret neck. The pickups were also quite undesirable, and the neck would not take a standard HB. (I wanted to put a '57 in the neck)

Edit:

Some people argue that the extreme string angle on string through guitars diminishes playability. Indeed, I found my SG-Z to be easier to play once I installed the stop tail piece, although acoustic volume was certainly reduced.

Not mine, but illustrates the string through:

The SG-90 is an SG-Z with a Steinberger trem on it- instead of the string-through bridge. I hear those trems are the worst thing ever.

Not totally true. I own a SG-90 and it has through body strings and no trem. My buddy owns one just like it. Plays, sounds, records and performs amazingly. Plus the extra frets are super fun.

Cool dude... but this post is from 2005 so its a bit late to the party.

Re: Why Doesn't Gibson Make Any String-Through Body Models?

I bet if you call Gibson with a decent enough Middlesex, Black Country accent and say "This is Jimmy Page I was wondering if you blokes could make me a Gibson Les Paul with Strings going through the body" it might get done. Other than that I don't see it happening.

Re: Why Doesn't Gibson Make Any String-Through Body Models?

I would think that the arch top design and the thickness would be a bad angle for the TOM. You'd end up with the wound strings bent across the back of the bridge. I see this a lot in string through guitars and it's just a bad design. Your wound strings should not be scraping the back of the TOM.

This one isn't bad but I have seen a lot worse with string through, just using this pic as an example.

Re: Why Doesn't Gibson Make Any String-Through Body Models?

My hardtail Jackson Soloist with a TOM is strings-through-body, and there isn't much room. The low E almost touches, as do the A, D, G, and B. The high E touches rather solidly. I'd have to lower the treble end of the bridge a fair amount to clear it, which I don't want to do. The only reason I put up with it is because I don't expect it to sound like a Les Paul or something.
