There is a difference between wear and abuse.

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

wow.. just skimmed though everones post.. the ussual and occasional ... huh.. LMAO.. seriously.. right on.. just wow.. went off in my head

a tad late to the party but ill chime in

A) I dont wipe down my guitars unless im changing strings, repair work, high AF or a combination of all of the above
B) I dont wipe down my strings BUT I always wash my hands before I play
C) String changes happen about once every 2 months on my main guitar.. longer for others.. really depends on playing time. I will also whip down the fretboard and condition it at this time
D) Guitars are tools to me and are treated the same as my tools.. I dont go out of my way to damage them but some time sh*t happens.. To me the absolutely most important thing is the neck , so as long as that stays relatively damage free.. its all good.. Most of my guitars stay on stands as I dont have many cases
E) My guitars are never to be sold by me.. by others.. perhaps, but not by me.. Reason I mod the f*ck out of them
F) I have a much higher chance of "accidentally" causing harm to my guitars than most here.. i.e. seizures.. Unless you play a guitar for an hour or so sitting down.. and get ready to put your guitar up, and realize you can no longer walk.. then you cannot understand this.. I had to lay my guitar on my bed ,gently in the corner, or ask someone to put my guitar up so many times in the past....because i was to incapacitated to do so myself ..My greatest fear is having "difficulty" and dropping my #1 and damaging the neck.. causes my heart to skip beats just thinking about all the times things could of went differently

we are each differently on how we take care of our stuff.. bluesman,I believe made a comparison about PC's/TV's and guitars.. my PC is babied a bit in that I dont have liquids around here NOR do i drop her/jolt her but at the same time, she is a tool/entertainment center.. I de dustify her every month or 2 BUT she literally has stays on 24/7 with the occasional reboot every 3 to 4 days.. and has been so since may of 2012.. not really a fair comparison though as my PC is worth substantially more than all my guitars put together times 100.. well the information thats on its 16.5 TB of HDD's is.. In any case.. id be just as devastated it something bad happened to my PC .. like I would my #1 guitar..

Those trees stood for decades without human intervention. I seriously doubt they're going to rot away if I don't follow anyone's "regular maintenance/upkeep" guidelines.

However, I will say that it might be a good idea to either not play them when you're sick, or at least go at them with clean strings, clean the coated and metal parts with disinfectant, and throw some conditioning oil on it, just to wash away the germs.

Yeah, but if you stumble into a half stack on stage...

Especially when they're encapsulated in layers and layers of tough poly coating.

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

Depends on how big of a stage you have. Most of the ones I was on were already occupied by the house band's gear that we had to set up around, and the only place to put a case was behind the P.A.

Couldn't lay it on top of my amp or behind it without shearing off a speaker cable, or resting it against their gear.

Otherwise, there was the pinball machines, which were in use, or the jukebox, which had a sloped top. Only place for my case was in a corner behind something, and it took more than just a few seconds to get it out.

I've been thru that too, most bar stages are pretty small. So what if it takes 15 or 30 seconds to put a guitar in it's case and put it behind something. I've known guys who've had serious damage to guitars they left leaning against an amp. I can't justify that risk just because I couldn't spare a minute. If it's worth the risk to you, by all means do it. But no one's going to reimburse you.

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

I don't mind if they're pristine or not. I'd rather give them some love and play them than make sure that they're kept in perfect condition. Yes, don't do anything stupid (I'm looking at you guitar flip), but don't freak out about every scratch on the top.

Blue is right though. Put it in a case or on a stand when you're done.

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

The biggest concern for me at the places I've been was theft more than damage, so I leaned my guitar against my amp where I could see it during breaks. If anyone wandered too close to the stage, it was "handled".

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

My instrument is always on a hanging stand on stage, in front of my amp. I don't play places where people can walk on stage and take stuff. For gigs where I'm just playing one set with the club's back line, when I'm done my guitar or bass stays with me. It's never in a car or out of sight. In 40 years of playing in clubs I haven't lost any instruments. :)

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

None of my regular players is pristine: I don't get uptight about a ding here and there but I've often gotten compliments from buyers on the condition of my guitars when I sell them. It's not that hard to avoid major trauma to the instrument. While my headstocks have intersected the occasional cymbal, there aren't any/many dings on the bodies.

As for why other people don't go to the same lengths I do? Probably the reason some people pay extra for relics. Different strokes...

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

Well I take care of everything I have. I like my equipment cleaned and maintained. Call me what you will I have no problem with that, It's too bad when you see some nice guitar that has been neglected by the owner . My way of thinking is if you look after it, it will look after you. Nice when I pull out the axes and the guy's say man you look after your stuff. I don't buy second hand anything unless I know the person who owns it and I know how it's been looked after. When it has dents and scratches on it I don't want it. 99% of the time I buy new then I know what I have, then I can keep it in the working order that I prefer. Accidents do happen anyone could get a scratch or a dent. lets face it there are those that are neglectful because they choose to be that way, And in most cases it shows up in their life in general with any thing they own.

I wipe each of my guitars after playing with a soft microfiber cloth before I put it in its case, my guitars only get stored in a hardcase.
I change strings every month or two, depends on how much I play. when I change the strings, I use conditioner on the fretboard and give them a more detailed wiping with the cloth. I guess I take pretty good care of my guitars, mostly due to the fact that I couldn't afford a bigger defect or getting a new one, even though they are rather "low end" but have an amazing set-up that took me a very long time, but the action is really nice and they both play great. Also, they are both on straplocks and there are NO dings or dongs on the body, just a bit on the headstock of one, I don't care about small chips, but it never happened yet

My 4 main players are on stands sitting in front of my amplifiers in the most low traffic corner of my family room. They get bumped into occasionally by my kids, but I don't worry about it. I'm more comfortable when they have some nicks and dings so I don't have to worry so much. That, and I like the well played look.
