Why is the AMPEG GVT series of amps sooo cheap all of a sudden ?

Good knights of the Sound Table.

I have the opportunity to get an Ampeg GVT52-112 (1X12 combo) at a silly good price.
On further inspection, i saw that the entire GTV range is pretty bloody cheap on the 2nd hand/used market these days !
Why is that ? Is there a quality problem that i do not know about ? Crappy transformers ? Blowing fuses ?
What's the catch here people ?

Any one here that owns a 'modern' Ampeg GTV of any wattage ?
Any and all info will be of great help.

I have that same exact amp. It sounds really good. I got mine when Sam Ash was clearing them out and don't regret it at all. I do wish it was a head or you could purchase a replacement headshell from Ampeg, but so what. The low resale price is probably because nobody heard about them when they came out. If I didn't play one in store, I never would have known they existed. Also, it has a Baxandall EQ, which is very different from the typical tone controls. Personally, I like it! I did change out the 70/80 speaker for a G12T75.

I'd definitely recommend picking one up for a good price.

They were a total flop sales wise. Sound wise? Total sleepers. Get em while they're cheap. I almost bought the 5w years ago because it has Baxandall EQ like my Matamps. Recommended 4/5

Those "weed accessory" conversation piece marketed Emi's always seemed mighty suspicious.... now admittedly, I've never actually owned em, but what put me off that it seemed like something whose #1 selling point was to show it off to your wasteoid buddies

Just marketing guys having fun

Really hemp is quite brilliant material for speakers and should be used much more. Paper is weak always a bit suspectible to elements and such...

And chicks.... but good point. Your local Cheech and Chongs would bow down, surely.

I'd just always wondered if they have OTHER winning qualities, or the hemp thing is the main cool factor there


PS if you go that route, don't forget to get Grolsch "beer locks" (which btw are pure win in their own right) on your guitar for double the popularity
