Why no love for the '59?

Re: Why no love for the '59?

There are plenty of people who love their '59s. I don't know why you perceive such dislike for the '59, but I don't really see it.

I couldn't AGREE MORE. As soon as anyone breathes the word "vintage" people are shouting "59".

Gimme a break already.

I don't know what threads this guy is reading, or where he gets his info, but I could go 5 years without hearing about the '59 again, especially with other pickups out there that nail the vintage "vibe" without having "flubby" bass, like DiMarzio's PAF Classic, or even the VPAF.

I absolutly LOVE my '59b/'59n combo in my LP Copy....it Almost sounds exactly like my '75 LP Custom

Re: Why no love for the '59?

never tried the bridge, but in mahogany guitars i do not like the 59n way too boomy, muddy, and boring.

Re: Why no love for the '59?

Doesnt a lot have to be said about how you apply them? ie /what pots and caps. I just seems you can vary a P/Us tone so much by what you peripheral it with.

1,725 posts vs. 300? Who has read more threads? Come on brother, we're both from Michigan, can't we just get along ;):laugh2:

Re: Why no love for the '59?

I dig the '59s! Always liked the '59 in the neck of just about any guitar (though, it can get a little too bassy at times, works a little better if you've got a warmer/darker bridge pup).
I've never tried the '59 bridge until I just got my Jackson Mark Morton signature model a couple days ago (it's got the '59 set). The bridge pup is very nice, and I think it'll stay. I may change the neck eventually to a Jazz, as I do prefer brighter neck pups, but it's working fine for now. :)

Re: Why no love for the '59?

I have a 59 TB in the bridge of one of my Strats, and I swear it the best pickup ever. It has a really clear, chimey clean tone, and nails all kinds of distorted tones (think classic rock), and yeah, it's nice and warm!

Re: Why no love for the '59?

The 59 smokes in the bridge of a Les Paul/mahogany type instrument. I found it a hair bright in the bridge of a PRS Cu22.

Once upon a time I had a set in a low end ibanez that was absolutely killer through the Princeton Reverb I had at the time.

That said, the 59 neck was a little boomy in the neck of my PRSi and les Pauls but smokin' good in the neck of my mahagony Warmoth VW guitar.

Its all about application and how the variables combine. Talking about any pickup in absolutes is a rookie mistake.

How do the neck pickups compare? The 59N vs. the '75 Gibson neck pickup?

I'm curious because I don't think Gibson calibrated pickups back then and your neck pickup in your '75 Gibson might be the same as your bridge pickup.

Which would mean that your '75 Les Paul would have two pickups similar to the 59B.

Re: Why no love for the '59?

i really dig my 59n - fattened up my ibanez 540s really nicely ... blends with a C5 well too ... even sounds good split!

Re: Why no love for the '59?

How is it for EVH tones when stuck in the Bridge position of a Strat? I just bought a used '59, and that's where it's going, in the Bridge of my Ash Strat. Had a JB. Jr and just can't stand it, like someone rolled off all the bass and treble. Bit like the difference between FM radio and AM radio!

I don't like these suggestions that the '59 is harsh and boomy. That is so NOT what I want this pickup for! I want a warm EVH '1984' Panama sort of vibe.

I had a '59 Neck in my Washburn N4 wayback and it was the PERFECT Neck pickup. Never heard a Neck position pickup sound so good for Classic Rock before. I had a Pearly Gates in the Bridge of that guitar, but it didn't work. Too thin-sounding, bit cardboardy. but I think that was because the Alder body of that guitar was so small and had no mass behind the bridge at all. And the Floyd Rose prob didn't help.

If this 59 doesn't sound the way I want it to, I'll try a Custom Custom next.

To me the 59 could have more mids and be tighter. It has an overall "blah" factor when I play it. It is something I can make work but, it isnt my favorite tone.

I will add, for clean tones from a humbucker, it is my favorite bucker ever. I dont play with cleans too often though.

Re: Why no love for the '59?

I like the 59b a lot. Very punchy, clean, open. The 59n gets a little boomy with my setups but I really like its complexity. I don't think there is such a thing as a one-pickup-that-does-it-all - but, it is nice for us bipolar people to have different pickups for different moods :D
