why not floyd spring block made from iron?

Re: why not floyd spring block made from iron?

The tonal differences come down to how the crystalline structure of the material is arranged. That's why you don't see glass or lead being used. They both are amorphous materials which would deaden the tone.

Crystal lettuce?

Close enough. It's the difference between a "ring" and a "thunk".

I say play faster, nobody can tell what you've got going on that way...:headbang:

Re: why not floyd spring block made from iron?

How about a tungsten bar? The length and forth could be upsized and do virtually the same thing???

Re: why not floyd spring block made from iron?

Wrought iron, as in - gates, fences, railings, furniture, etc - is actually mild steel. Cast iron can be machined, cut, milled, drilled and tapped. To get the best results, it requires tooling that is made for the purpose, that has a different geometry than what is typically used for steel.

As far as glass not being resonant...... Ever tap on a wine glass?

Re: why not floyd spring block made from iron?

^^
A crystal wine glass or just a cheap non crystal one? If you have both, try them side by side.

Re: why not floyd spring block made from iron?

Ive always used brass blocks and a firm believer in the benenfits. However, I do have a TI block that I scored second hand at a good price that I need to try one of these days. I know its more about mass and property of the material its made from, but I just still cant wrap my head around how something so much lighter can create the same level of, or better sustain

IIRC usually the block is part of the ground circuitry. Glass is not a good conductor of electricity.

Yup, you're right! the ground is wired to the claw -> springs -> block -> plate -> saddles -> your hand.

Pffft you guys must spend your lives looking through a cardboard tube.

Cyrstal block? Nice. You could easily just earth the bridge instead of the claw you dilberts.

Re: why not floyd spring block made from iron?

On the guitars I build and have built I never ground to the claw. I always ground to the pivot studs/screws, that way the wire is completely hidden except inside the control cavity, the same as a TOM bridge. I never put a cover on the spring cavity. I don't like the looks of them, and it leaves it open so you can reach around and rake the springs if a person wants.

Nice idea ol chap.

Re: why not floyd spring block made from iron?

You've basically got an Iron block in steel (iron/carbon alloy). Steel, I would presume then, would be better over it's pure iron father.

Most steel differs from iron by less than 1% of its contents (adding carbon), so I'm guessing it wouldn't sound any different-until it rusted away into oblivion.
