Why the dislike for belly cut guitars?

Re: Why the dislike for belly cut guitars?

I just played a belly cut Tele in GC today. Some deluxe something or other. It's just not right.

Re: Why the dislike for belly cut guitars?

My three favorite guitar designs are LP's, 335's, and SG's. All three are very comfortable to me, standing or sitting. Maybe it's because I have enough padding in my midsection that I don't care if they have contours or not (maybe if you're skinny contours make a bigger difference). What I notice more is an arched top, which feels great to rest my arm on.

Most of my favorite guitar playing has been done on LP's, so I don't nit pick about the neck/body juncture, or the heel, or the weight, or God knows what else people whine about. It's a great design that inspires me to play my best. Those big name guys did amazing things with theirs, so there's no reason for me to make excuses about the design holding me back. When I look at an LP, I don't see anything that needs to be changed.

I don't have anything against contours, I'm just not going to go out of my way to get one, or pay more for one. Same thing for 24 fret necks. These things aren't a factor in my decision process. I'm perfectly content with the original designs (same with '58 V's). Maybe if I was younger and just starting out I'd look at it differently.

Re: Why the dislike for belly cut guitars?

I'd happily play a Tele without the belly cut (well, I've never played one WITH a belly cut anyway), but it's definitely not bad thing and would make sitting down playing a little more comfortable over extended periods.

Re: Why the dislike for belly cut guitars?

It is my placebo OCD stuff where if my tele or LP has it, it isn't pure. Then again, I do everything else I'm not supposed to do. Maybe just the belly cut is crossing the line, or maybe I just simply don't like them.

I'm confusing myself. Would you say SGs have a tummy cut? The edges are contoured but not exactly strat belly cut. Either way SGs are the most comfortable to me and give full access to every fret, with great tone and looks. Damn I need a real SG.

Re: Why the dislike for belly cut guitars?

I find the belly cut on a Strat to be too much but there's not that much that I like about strats. Most of my other guitars have a modest belly cut and I definitely prefer it to a flat back.

Re: Why the dislike for belly cut guitars?

I wonder when they'll introduce the Boob Cut ?

My very first electric was a Strat copy so I am accustomed to the contours and actually more comfortable with them than without them. The only guitars I feel close to comfortable playing standing up that do not have them are SG's. A Les Paul I can get along with but it's not as comfortable for me as a Strat.

Re: Why the dislike for belly cut guitars?

I sling my guitars moderately low, and (IMO) belly cuts on a low slung guitar are an ergonomic atrocity.

With my SG's, the tummy area and fret access aren't the issue. The horns are considerably wider than a Strat (or in my case, a SUPER-STRAT), and the top horn cuts into the left side of my chest, thus making it hard to position the fingerboard closer to the clavicle area (when I'm standing, I wear the guitar as high as possible).

Re: Why the dislike for belly cut guitars?

Doesn't bother me either way. I just don't think I would buy a Les Paul or a Tele with one. I am very much a traditionalist!

Re: Why the dislike for belly cut guitars?

I think some people get cranky when you start taking wood off the guitar, not realizing that it doesn't really matter all that much.

I have guitars with or without, and I don't really notice an advantage either way.

If it wasn't for technological advancements, we'd all be playing acoustics.

Re: Why the dislike for belly cut guitars?

Whilst I loved my old ASAT the sharper edge of the body was really uncomfortable for me. When I got my Wayne Super T with tummy cut and forearm contour things were much better. Strangely Les Paul's are still the guitars that fit me the best so I could never understand why the ASAT didn't?

Re: Why the dislike for belly cut guitars?

I switched from only using Tele's to Strat's because of the lack of the forearm contour.
Bruised forearms are no fun. I'd gladly get another Tele if it had contours.
