Why the heck do People like real tight/compressed amps?

Dude, is it me or do you just always come up with the BEST lines?

I think I might start a collection of your finest in my signature.

Re: Why the heck do People like real tight/compressed amps?

I like my Marshall loose and fat sounding. But with aggressive mids too. After tweaking my plexi a lot, it's probably closer now to a SuperBass than a SuperLead.

Re: Why the heck do People like real tight/compressed amps?

I have to say that I dislike really angry sounding music the same way I dislike angry writing or angry depressing and irresponsibly violent movies.

Saving Private Ryan was one of the most graphically violent movies I've ever seen...but it was not irresponsible and the intent was not to glorify violence or incite people or bring out the worst in people.

I like to see art bring out the best in people...not indulge thier worst habits and worst fantiasies.

I think musicians and movie makers who make a fortune by creating works that degrade women or exploit violence and the anger of impressionable kids are making a big mistake and make this world uglier...not better.

You know: if you put garbage into your head or mind, what's going to come out will also be garbage. And this world has to much garbage already.

that, my friends is one of the best things i have ever read on this forum.

i totally agree with you Lew. I was a bit angry as well when i was younger and i still get angry but i like what comes out to contribute to the beauty in the world.
Yes it is still super cool to hear aggressive music but not for too long and not the way some of these sounds come out. Aggressive to me by the way is Halen and Shenker. So is SRV sometimes and Hendrix as well. ZZtop.

i think it is funny how these bands think that by sounding like a buzz saw they have attitude. i think it is homogenous and bland. Have you ever heard more attitude than B.Gibbons?? Now THATS attitude.

There is no Heaven without a Hell, if everyone was all nice and happy things would get real boring real quick. Let there be "positive" art, but also let there be "the Dark Side", can't have one without the other, therefore I exsist to bring darkness to the light when needed. :headbang:

Cheers,

That band is a perfect example of that tone. But they're good at it at least.

Ahh ok. You just really hate anything modern, tone wise? That's what I figured, but that clarifies it.

No worries, to each his own... but Meshuggah does have one of the most 'direct' sounding guitar tones out there, but they're tight as ****!

As for me having the best lines... I'm just an ******* who likes to get straight to the point.:laugh2:

That's quite an assumption!

No, I don't "hate anything modern, tone wise"...just angry, negative crap. :laugh2:

If you don't understand it, or think its "angry bumblebee" tone... you obviously aren't playing the style of music it's made for.

For me, the tighter, the better.
word.

there's stuff an amp, that isnt as tight as a virgin, just wont pull it off.

on the other hand, there's things an overly tight amp wont do very well.

for everything there's a use, and like people, amps are diferent, to suit the players needs.

to bash the amp, just cos the player cant dial in a tone that isnt buzzing like a beehive is ridiculous. and if you dont like the music the amp is aimed, dont use it.

Yup that the thing I'm seeing more and more. Every time I got to guitar center there usually is one of those teenage kids playing metal and shred on a Marshall mg or some modern amp. Very rarely do I see the younger people play the nice crate low wattage tube amps or fenders. Thats usually the older people who seem to appreciate the tone of the amps better instead of loading up the gain on the amp.

I should feel mildly offended, I OWN one of the nice crate low wattage amps lol. You cant make blanket statements like that :)

Thats just a observation on my local GC. No offense any teenagers on forum. Im just stating observations, not my opinions on the topic. The rarely thing is true at the GC I go to, but sometimes when I go I see some of younger people play on vox or fender doing some classic rock or blues stuff about like 30% of the time I go there. But mostly I heard metal now these days as I guess that in thing with younger guitarists now.

Re: Why the heck do People like real tight/compressed amps?

It's all preference. Some may say Petrucci's tone is too high gain and may think it sucks. I love it. Some drool over Claptons earlier tones, I hate them with a passion.

See? It's all preference. Now don't start slamming me for what I said.. Only an example.

Re: Why the heck do People like real tight/compressed amps?

There's way too much oversimplification here. Some of those old Fender/Gibson/Silvertone, etc etc amps get so fuzzed and farted out they sound as horrid as any "tight" amp. And I've heard some great tones out of SS and modeling amps.
I agree with that
My Fender Pro Lunior (although not vintage it has vintage tone) sounds really farty and i like the sound of a distortion pedal better. Although a crank 60's AC30 is god tone.

Well, I'm an old fart, and pretty much all you'll hear from me playing in GC is metal too. But it ain't the same metal the kids are playing :D

I don't plug into those Crates or Voxes either :D

Tangent:

The thing that irks me at GC most (besides the idiots who work at my local one), is everytime I grab a guitar in there the thing is tuned to drop-K or something and every amp I plug into has the gain, treb, pre, and bass dimed...and yup..you guessed it...mids at about 8 oclock....

Re: Why the heck do People like real tight/compressed amps?

I'm mostly a metal player and I hate compressed tones. I hated my Metal Zone, I hate the R-fier mode in my Roland Cube (unless it's with really low gain, but my pickups suck so it's a no-go), I hate losing the dynamics on what I play. Besides, tight tones don't sound heavier to my ears. Natural, breathing tones with a nice thick distortion do the trick for me, as in a Marshall or a Laney... :smokin:

That's why I enjoy Marty Friedman's (Megadeth) lead tone so much! The guy just plugged his Jackson into a Marshall and let his fingers do the talking. His tone was very UNcompressed to put it somehow. And that tone is what I'm after. :fingersx:

Re: Why the heck do People like real tight/compressed amps?

A lot of these amps are very versatile though. Mesa's have good low gain sounds as well. I'm very happy with my Mesa combo for classic rock sounds, but at the same time I'll leave the gain at about 2 for those.

I do agree that heavier sounds don't require nearly as much distortion as most metal bands use, I'll never put my distortion higher than 6 on my amp, and I find it actually sounds thickest at 4. I like metal, but I don't like a lot of the guitar tones. The heaviest I like is Zakk Wylde's tone, but I think even he uses too much distortion. I like Dimebag Darrell's playing, but I can't even listen to it for more than a few minutes because I absolutely hate his tone more than anything I've ever heard (though it was immensely improved after he switched to tubes, but still not to my liking).

As for the comparison of high gain tube amps with SS amps, just listen to the really good metal tones out there which could never have been achieved with a SS amp. Sure you can say that a really bad example of a high gain tone out of a tube amp can be had from a SS amp just the same as you could say that a really bad example of a low gain tube amp tone can be had from SS. I'm not defending SS amps, I dont want anything that harsh sounding and tight, I'm merely pointing out the flaw in your logic.

Re: Why the heck do People like real tight/compressed amps?

most of you are all correct. lol

how so?

the people who play the high gain amps are going for that sound

and the people who dont play the high gain amps aren't going for that sound

but my opinion is this....

as long as i can hear it and it's clear....then it's alright

but im going after a clearer, fender distorted tone, stratty and all that jazz.

Re: Why the heck do People like real tight/compressed amps?

i was at a guitar store yesterday and we were trying out the VHT deliverance and the CAE OD100

the guy that was listening to them told me that they didnt have that much gain.
by the way he was playing at bedroom levels.

i told him that tube amps are not made to have their best sound at quiet levels.
i think that ALOT of people mix this up and as a result they want these super duper gain machines. they mix up gain with sustain. i mean how much crunch do you need till it starts turning to mush??

turn a tube amp up and watch it come alive.
