Why use a Telecaster as rhythm guitar?

Re: Why use a Telecaster as rhythm guitar?

I've regularly tracked rhythm on recordings with a tele, after recording with my trusty LP studio, the blend of the two guitars actually makes it sound fatter than just normal double-tracking on an LP. The single coil just cuts through better and gives it the higher frequencies. The LP gives the mid-range and lower frequencies to cover the other sonic spectrum. Still play my LP live though cos the humbucker is just more beefy.

I never really "got" Teles until maybe 2-3 years ago.

There's so many different subtle variations of them to adapt them to specific needs. There's not much they can't do well.

IMHO, the stock neck is worthless, but there are some fabulous middle position rhytym tones on a stock Tele.

I read once that Jimmy Page used a Tele in the studio because of it's range and versatility, but switched to Les Paul for live because 'the Les Paul sounds the same from more than 6 feet out. The Tele just dissipates tonally within the first 6 feet, live.'

For me, I mainly use a Tele live because I can cover hard rock to country to blues to pop to funk with it - no other guitar gets me into all that territory.

In the studio, I will put a Fender (Tele or Strat) against a Gibson (LP or SG) in stereo playing the same rhythm part because the Fenders bring the bass and treble while the Gibsons bring the mids - it's a beautiful, perfect match, and just sounds huge.

Whatever works. Judge by the sound, not the name.

Re: Why use a Telecaster as rhythm guitar?

No-one's mentioned the feel ? With the higher tension from being string-through-body, and often quite chunky neck profiles, the stiffer feel of a Tele is very akin to an acoustic guitar, and many primarily-acoustic players feel quite comfortable playing Tele's. You can strum away even quite forcefully and a Tele will respond in a similar way to an acoustic. I don't think it's a coincidence that many singer/ songwriter types often favour Tele's.

That makes sense as to why I love my Tele so much...

I haven't noticed that so much. Perhaps in my haste to get each guitar comfortable for me to play, I chose different strings (either thinner or thicker) that offset tension or acoustic feel. But I did notice how you can beat on it and it stays in tune for hours.
