why would you want......

Re: why would you want......

big frets are where it is at for me... in fact a neck with medium or large frets feels slicker and faster to me over a neck with minis.... case in point is my 1999 MIM Strat has minis that have already been fret dressed and they need it again soon... that guitar feels slow to me as i can feel the fingerboard under my finger tips... my new 06 MIM Strat has large fret wire and it feels like i can race across the board....

I think i'd be one to like scalloped boards....

Re: why would you want......

im with whofan.
i love the scallops on my jem7vwh but im not too sure how id feel about them all over the neck :]

Re: why would you want......

i have a old Kramer neck that is scalloped from the 10th fret to the 22nd... a bad home done job... still i like the feel of it.. but for neck strength i think i'll stick with just getting extra huge frets..... Oneday i plan to fix this Kramers neck so it looks better... maybe use it on a better body then the one that came with it

Re: why would you want......

My Epi Strat has the freboard scalloped from 12th to 21th. Bad guitar, I know.

However, the playability in those frets is divine. If you like those scalloped 21-24 frets, you won't believe how amazing the whole upper frets feel scalloped. There's no "note-bending" issues which I've read of, so far. I'm always spot on intonation, with my normal touch. That's with 10-52 strings tuned to Eb or E that feel like butter on the upper registers. :D

Give it a shot, people!

I like to feel the wood.

:laugh2: :laugh2:

Personally, I can't stand anything other than jumbo. Small frets just feel nasty to me - I hate the feeling of fretting against the fretboard. I completely disagree that a light touch ruins feel - imo, most of the feel in one's playing comes from vibrato/bending, which is smoother when you're not pushing onto the board, and from the right hand.

Re: why would you want......

I personally can't stand small frets. All my guitars have jumbo's. Zerb, do you know the exact fret gauge J/C uses? I'm guessing 6150? I've never known for sure, just curious.

Custom made japanese fretwire, but Dunlop 6100 seems to be the closest commonly available wire ;)

Re: why would you want......

I have both medium and small fret guitars, but I am leaning more and more towards larger frets, and I will have a Kramer mutt with HUGE frets finished sometime in December. Bending is really a whole lot easier on them, and it doesn't really make you play any slower, once you get used to it.
