Wil Phatcats do JM and Jb tones

Re: Wil Phatcats do JM and Jb tones

i dont like the single coil adapters since they usually dont put the pup in the right place but it is an option and will get you closer than a phat cat or ghs dream90. a vintage wind strat pup like the antiquity II surfer neck is a great choice for those tones. the duncan cs does a strat under bucker cover, but the surfer in the adapter will be really close and a lot cheaper. i guess thats what i would do if i was in your shoes, itll sound good, probably very good actually but might not nail what you are after.

joes "best" strat is a '55 hard tail according to him

I agree. Get an Antiquity II Surfer and Single Coil Adapter. That's going to get the closest to a Strat neck pickup sound. And they're GREAT Strat pickups. They're what I use.

Re: Wil Phatcats do JM and Jb tones

Keep in mind that the Strat in Humbucker can be ordered to sound like any Strat pickup, so you can have it wound like a Surfer II or Five Two, or whatever.

Re: Wil Phatcats do JM and Jb tones

The Phat Cat (or any humbucker sized p90) will do the humbucker more than it will the singlecoil. Certainly the PC is not even aiming at a p90 tone either.....so that could make it better or worse depending on your rig.
I think maybe wiring in a bass cut switch - especially for the neck slot - might help with that singlecoil sound like Mayer, but as soon as you get your strat you'll probably see its not really close at all.

Re: Wil Phatcats do JM and Jb tones

I agree HS might be the best way to go invthis case. Nothing else does Strat neck tone like a Strat pickup.
The Twisted Tele neck comes pretty close, but I know you need something humbucker-sized.

I didn't realize the Dream90 was basically a Strat coil inside. That's good to know.

Re: Wil Phatcats do JM and Jb tones

i dont think the dream 90 is a strat coil inside, not sure why someone would think that. its very much a vintage type p90 thing

Re: Wil Phatcats do JM and Jb tones

^ Yep, an 8.4K/8.2k p90 shaped/constructed wind is unlikely to be anything close to a strat no matter how you dice it.
