Wilkinson similar 498T and 490R

I am looking for a kit that resembles to the classic gibson 498T and 490R, I've been looking on ebay, Wilkinson has a very reasonable price, it would be a good pickup?

anyone have a good tip similar pickups 498T and 490R?

They have some used sets on GC's website and on Musicgorounds as well....take a look dude!

Used Gibson pickups are what I suggest if you want the 498/490 combo.

+1. They're not nearly as expensive used.

Some players aren't all that fond of them, and replace them because the bridge is pretty bright and the neck is fairly dark (this is easily changed by swapping a magnet or two).

You could also use a Duncan C5 (SH-14) and PGN, which would be a more popular choice here for those type of tones (14K A5 bridge and 8K A2 neck).

You're not likely to find low-cost PU's that sound as good as Duncans and Gibsons.

WHY are you looking for those p'ups? Stock, they're the worst-sounding Gibson p'ups known to mankind, and I'm being gentle in my description.

If you need an explanation of why there is such a huge market for replacement pickups look no further than the 498/490 set. Horrible.

Some people like the 490's and 498's. The 490 R and T set is my favorite set of stock Gibson humbuckers. Especially in an SG.

I like the 498t in an SG. The pickups out of an Epiphone G-400 SG are close. They sound better if you remove the covers and remove the huge buildup of wax on top. I've bought the 498t used for as little as 35 dollars. You just have to watch Ebay for a while.

I have a Gibson which has undergone plenty of pup changes. By FAR the worst ones were the 498/490. Trust me this is a better option;

I really like the 498T in SGs. I have one I keep stock and one with a Custom. After trying a Custom 5 and Custom 8, I found the 498T a little more open and raunchy, but still full sounding, while the Custom has a bit more refined quality to it with a tighter low end. I started with pickup swapping mostly because I picked up on the hate for 498T over at the Ultimate-Guitar forums and got looking at Duncans, but as I've gotten older and developed a better ear for tone, I've come to realize that that was just pointless gear snobbery. It's a great humbucker. The looser low end probably doesn't work so well in a Les Paul, but in an SG it just helps it sound a little bigger. In the mix you probably couldn't tell a difference though.

The 490R is great with an A5. The stock A2 isn't bad, but it doesn't make a good match with the 498T. It also happens to be a potted T-Top with an A5 in it, and sounds great in the bridge. I put one in a Xaviere SG copy to get make a Norlin knock off and it turned out really well.

Right now I've got a spare 498T with an A8 in it that I'm gonna swap out with my Custom once some other parts come in the mail. I'm pretty eager to see how that compares to my Custom and the stock 498T in my other SG.

I am also planning an A8 swap for a 498T I have. Let us knoe how it sounds. I imagine it will sound pretty good.

Nothing wrong with a 498T/490R in an SG once you pop an A5 into the 490. Sounds like an SG is supposed to, to me anyway.

An A8 498T and A5 490R is much improved over the stock version. Gives the bridge a fuller, warmer sound, and opens up the neck with more treble. If Gibson used these mags in the 498T/490R sets, there wouldn't be nearly as many guys replacing them.

I could've offered you at least two sets a month of those since september 1999.

That's a lot of p'ups... do you have so many guitars? I'd be very happy to supply for you... but not as much as my customers! ;)
