will a 1 watt amp ever sound like a 100 watt amp? 50watter attenuated heavily??

I have been thinking about getting a Rivera Silentsister isocab, but it only attenuates 30 dB worth. so it sounds like I wont get it. the new marshall 1 watters are coming out. I just dont think 1 watt will ever sound like 100 watts of tube speaker exploding trouser flapping mayhem, no matter how you EQ/compress it up! I was thinking of getting a fuzz but it prolly would not be worth recording with the epi valve junior at low volumes really?? Any thoughts insights feedback musingz are appreciated :approve:

Iso cabs are great; I would not be able to record without one!

There are things you can do to get the attenuation even greater than 30dB; which I agree, is not a lot when you have an amp cranked, regardless of wattage.

Tonally, of course, there will always be differences between amps (even from the same manufacturer) that have different power amplifiers. The real difference is in clean headroom, though. If you are not concerned about cleans, then a recorded guitar track with an iso cab and a CRANKED amp sounds great!

This is 2 tracks of a 2W amp being pushed to power amp distortion. No EQ or compression is done to any of the guitars. When it gets clean, that is a 100W amp; it achieves cleans I could never get with the 2 watter and still have it be audible in a band context.

thanks man, you have definitely been spurring on my gas for this over the months, nice clips! I remember your recommendations of blankets and gramma pad and randall cab, still thinkin about stuff after a beer of shock top just now, I mean I have never heard axefx or kemper sound like a fuzz pedal or an organic Orange amp ... but my epiphone valve junior has the tube flavor at low volumes with my tech 21 oxford character pedal, just sounds super flubby for rhythym guitar, good for solos, I made a thread on this -- https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=236795

I am infatuated with the awesome tones in this album: http://sandveiss.bandcamp.com/album/sandveiss-ep

but ya even 40dbA of attenuation is not gonna be much if your comin down from 90db which is about what it takes for a drummer, I mean the bass and everything for sensitive apartment neighbors, well, its not gonna be a cranked amp sound prolly

ok I see your edit - I have listened to that one a few times - it is pretty sweet!

with an iso cab I would try running my thunderverb 50 attenuated to hell and cant help but dream I would get godsend tone thru a silentsister at low volumes, prolly would not happen and I would have to do genious stuff with the mic and mic placement, I like the silentsister as an armchair quarterback heh rock on! :approve:

When I have the blankets/Gramma in place, my amp is no louder than loud television. I put it into a closet or other damped place, and you really cannot hear it outside of my apartment.

Of course, I do not know your neighbours, and ANY degree of guitar playing may be unacceptable to them.

Of course, there is also the option of DI'ing guitars and reamping them at a rehearsal space ...

cool man! ya a loud television would prolly not be legit, the dude across can tell me whatever song I listen to and the dude above me has complained cause his sister was sleeping on a friday at 8pm so I am dammed lol no room in my closet, thanks for the heads up! cross that one off the gas list lol thats good cause I got the recabinet/tech21oxfordcharacterpedal so I got gear to experiment with

cheers brutha - many thanks, GREAT musicianship on that track there, just listened to it a few times :beerchug:

A cranked 1 watt amp will sound better than an heavily attenuated one.

I used to rent a rehearsal studio that had amps you could rent and bring my laptop with the Line6 Toneport and just record the guitar tracks. In my experience if you want a 4x12 sound with a cranked amp you have to record a 4x12 with a cranked amp. That said you can get good tones other ways. Have you tried tracking your guitars, rhythm, with one down tuned and one in normal tuning playing the same part?

+1

note: that's a very annoying Orange picture... typical of the Orange's fanboy forum.
