Will an OR50 get me here?

I've been jonesing for an Orange lately. Since I have a thing for 30-50 watt single channel amps, the OR50 is the most likely suspect. Would it be able to get me similar tones to this, especially the rhythm guitars starting around 1:50?



I know that these guys have used a 6505 and a Bogner Alchemist, but I like that an Orange might help me get into sludgier Russian Circles territory when I want to go that direction. If it can also do these kind of gritty cleans and punchy rhythm tones, I might have to chase one down.

I am pretty sure my Thunderverb can go into that direction.

So the OR50 even more so, if you ask me !

Orange amps can deff do the Sludge'y thing very well.

I have a Custom Shop AD50 and for the tone in the video I'd have to turn the bass way down, but you can get there. Oranges have very flabby bass to them IME.

I think other amps would excel more for the guitars starting around 1:50

I dig my orange thunderverb and ya it could easily cop that sound, but it was built for more sludgy doom type applications

Yeah it can definitely get.those tones. Gonna have to use your guitars volume knob for cleans and they're gonna be a bit hairy. I love dirty orange tones but not a fan of the cleans. If someone made a two channel amp... orange dirt and fender cleans I'd be all over dat

Cool, thanks for the input er'body. I have a vintage Bandmaster that does the Fender clean to just breaking up thing, but I want to add a different flavor for dirtier stuff. Extra cool points if I can it rein in to do this kind of thing.

Funny story: literally minutes after posting this I saw this band announced on FB that they're endorsing Orange now, rocking Thunderverb 50s.

I am not 100% sure why, but NOT a lot of bands use Thunderverbs.
It is only Down that i know of, who use them.

I'm always impressed at how few bands use TVs and how very little info and reviews are out there for this amp. I've owned one for a bit over 6 months now and, while I can understand it might not be everyone's cup of tea, it's a killer amp that would fit the bill for many types of music and players. I'm guessing naming it thubderverb (while it fits it well) also pigeonholed it to the point where folks won't give it a chance, assuming it's a sludgy onetrick pony, when in fact it's a very very versatile amp.

The only (lightly negative) thing i can say about the TV50, is that it could have sounded even closer to a Retro 50 (now sadly discontinued)
Atleast the TV50 is a happy medium between almost classic sounding and almost modern sounding.
To my ears it does neither spot on, but that is exactly why the TV50 sounds unique - and i love it for that !
It' got it's own thing going.



If only my TV50 sounded like this in it's B channel.



Same can be said for my 5150.
Most people over look the amp, because it made such a name for it self in the metal scene.
Now everyone thinks it is a dedicated metal amp, partly because most of the youtube clips you see is with this amp maxed (gain wise) and active pick ups

Another thing to consider is that Orange amps are super loud. You've got to think about whether you need that much volume for your particular gigs. Some of the lunchbox Oranges hit on those same tones, but do it at a reasonable volume level. And by reasonable, I still mean loud. You just run out of headroom, if you need maximum db's.

The OR15 is a killer amp, and same with the Tiny and Dual Terror. With the masters up, and the gain to taste, you still get that Orange tone......albeit EL-84 variety.

Volume isn't really an issue. About half my live playing has my cab mic'd up off-stage and the rest I can run the volume a bit lower and boost it with pedals. I do this now with my Bandmaster, which is around 45 LOUD watts with its aftermarket OT. I just tend to prefer the tone from bigger glass & iron.

That said, would a Thunderverb or Rockerverb be a better option than the OR50? How do these amps handle pedals? I have a local Orange dealer, but they only have the Rockerverb 100 in stock at the moment.

My Thunderverb, like i mentioned before, comes with a built in attenuator.

So, even though it is a master vol amp, i have the added flexibility of the attenuator, so that i can bring the crunch down to a whisper, and still get that all-valve/toob tone.
And, on the used market the TV50 will probably be cheaper than the OR50 any ways !

Wasn't Mastodon using Thunderverbs for awhile? I think they are on Marshalls these days.
