Will counterpoint live again?

Whenever I hear counterpoint in composition it always takes me back to my college jazz ensemble days. You understand what joy is once you play an arrangement vs simply playing a tune! Give a listen to this:

Although I must say, "Hell must be like being a drummer in the Pat Metheny Group!". Pat keeps his drummers subdued at all times. ROFLMAO. It's like he's telling them, "Just play the damn cybal and shut up!". ROFLMAO! Hit that snare and you're fired! LOL!

Pat Metheny is such a great player, but I really don't like his tone all that much. His sound is very preocessed to my ears. I think he would sound a lot better if he just plugged into a nice Fender blackface and worked a nice clean tone. (Just mu opinion)

When I think of Counterpoint....... I think of Bach's Boree in E minor. It is such a chilling experience to play that beautiful melody against a great bass line. Its a great learning experience for any guitar player to learn this piece. Not that hard to learn, but it will teach you a large amount about counterpoint!

His tone ...? Hell his whole band sounds over processed! :chairfall His recent guitar work on "Speaking of Now " and "Way Up" is much better IMO. He always has used freaky delays and such. Consequently, he always sounded like a cat that had his reverb turned up to the max! Way too wet! The band too!

But its his phrasing that I dig the most. The rythmic cadences he uses in his melodic lines. The way he slides up to a note, or the way he slides off of it makes his guitar sing. He also has dynamic control of his volume simply by touch.

He and Benson also have more treble in their tone than your average jazz cat which is cool if you can pull it off. Lots of cats roll off the old tone nob to get that dark jazz tone. You have to pay more attention to your touch when you brighten up your tone in a traditional jazz vein!

For example, I'm really starting to dig the jazzy tone I've been getting outta my bridge pickup on my EPI LP lately. For a long time the neck pickup has been the jazz man's bread and butter. Hell lots of jazz guitars don't even have a bridge pickup! Today, though, brighter jazz tones are starting to come around. Rather than that bell-like guitar tone that jazz guitar players are known for, I'm starting to hear a more nasal sounding ahhh tones start to emerge. That ahh tone can really sing you a ballad baby! :smokin: Know what I mean?

I guess I should say that it's the art of musical arrangement that I miss. Counterpoint is simply an element of musical arrangement. I love to hear arrangement much more than just a melody with a rythm section just comping chords in the background. It does something for me!

hehe..nice tune! Everything flows. You have to look at the song...with more drums the tunes would suck and he's a pro drummer, you have to accept that and you don't have to show on every tune what you can do.

It's the song and yes a great arrangement is gold.

I really like play only few notes..believe it or not! The reason could be that I started with piano..I'm not the typical guitarist..tell that other musicians lol..they don't believe me. If it doesn't groove I play fast, if it does groove I see no point to play 100000 notes :)

I must reiterate what I said to Guitar Toad in the other thread. It's like Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do. "Be water my friend!". Style is about fitting in!
