Will I be dissapointed? Epi SG question...

I've got 2 Gibson SG's now and I absolutely dig everything about them. For me, they're some of the best sounding, best looking, most comfortable, and one of the easiest guitars to play that I own... I've always wanted one with a Maestro trem, but couldn't afford one...

But now Epi has one with a trem for about $450. I'm drooling over this one, but its an Epi. Will the Epi have the same tone, feel, and vibe as my Gibson SG's? Or will I just be dissapointed when it arrives?

Go to GC, see if they have one in stock and if they do, try it out. I haven't played one of those but I'd try one out just for the heck of it and I'm not really and SG guy.

I had an EPI SG and eventually sold it for a Gibson. There was no comparison in the feel of the instruments. The Gibson kills it. I thought the EPi sounded nice distorted. Other that that, it didn't do much for me.

Thanks, that helps. I've got a few Epi Les Pauls, but I still crave for a Gibby. I have the feeling the same will happen if I go for the Epi SG... especially already owning a couple myself...

Maybe I'll just have to save that $450 and put it towards the angus young SG... uh oh....

Re: Will I be dissapointed? Epi SG question...

I would consider the Angus Young if I had the cash but I'd probably spend it on something else first. That's just me. Even though I had a Gibby LP before and now have a Epi LP, I'm not gassing for a Gibby anymore. The only Gibby I would truly be happy with is a Custom. I settled that argument while at the guitar show earlier this month. The price tag is enough to keep me happy with the LP I have now, even if it is an Epi. It's still a Les Paul and everyone who has heard it says it sounds great.

A lot of epiphones have maple necks and alder bodies, but there are ones which are made completely from african mahogany. But they still feel different from Gibsons... it's not just the materials and the poly instead of the nitro, there's something about the neck profile and fretboard which just makes it feel like an Epiphone, just like a Gibson neck feels like a Gibson.

I love Epiphones even though I think they're overpriced and are inferior guitars. Maybe I'm delluded, but I think they're fun. I don't have to worry about them. If I wanted a better instrument though, I'd get an elitist, tokai, used gibson, etc etc and just install the trem on it after getting it.

I bought a used SG Standard (4 months old) on Ebay for $780. It is an amazing guitar. The benefit of buying new doesn't justify the cost.

Re: Will I be dissapointed? Epi SG question...

I had a SG '61 RI with the Vibrola trem, and the biggest difference I noticed was that it had a thinner sound, most likely from the bridge not being anchored to the body like a stopbar. Also the string tention is not adjustable with the trem.
I had sold it and miss everyday it's been gone, it really looked cool.
