Will I regret Selling my Mark IV?

To fund a purchase of a Ceriatone DC30 clone. I do like many things about the Boogie, it's versatility being tops of the list. I just realize I'm not a tweaker, I want to be able to plug in, spend a reasonable amount of time finding the sweet spot and just play. Obviously I haven't demoed the Ceriatone, but some of the Youtube clips are promising. Does anyone have personal experience with this amp, or the amp it's cloning?

Yes, you will regret it. The Mk. Iv is just one of those amps in the top echelon of all amps along with Marshall JMP/JCM,and a few others. OTOH, you can always get another one, but lots competititon on Ebay. You'll be able to sell it for top dollar.

Wow, considering that Mesa even provides a CHART that shows you the sweet spots....

How lazy can you be???? LOL!!! (Just kidding!!)

No question about it, the Mark IV is not for players who seek instant gratification, nor for those who suffer from a psychological trait known as "Low Frustration Tolerance". I've had my Mark IV EVM combo for about five years, and there are some features that I have never used, or only used once or twice. I basically set it in the sweet spots, and forget it. I like the SED/Winged C EL34/6L6 power tubes, and I use a mix of preamp tubes.

I like the ability to go between various power levels, from about 15 watts to about 85. It has a very small stage footprint, and with its 112 EVM Theile cab I can easily hang with any half-stack. I use a variety of G&Ls, Gibsons, and Ibanez guitars--they all sound great through the Mark IV. I play blues, jazz, classic rock and even country with my band--not many amps are this versatile. It does weigh a short ton, but it is worth hauling it around: it gives me great tone, and has proven to be very reliable.

I can't speak to the Ceriatone; but one should always have a backup amp. And if you do any recording, the tweaking capabilities of the Mark IV would serve you well.

Good luck!

im not a huge mesa fan but if i had a mark 4 i might keep

Re: Will I regret Selling my Mark IV?

I have found the Mark IV to be one of the classic amps....like an old Marshall or fender..I think you will regret it....and it will cost out the ying-yang to replace it. Amps, like guitars, are so personal...if you're not happy with it...then maybe a change is due. Good luck with whatever you decide!

I think you should find out the safe way. I will hold it for you free of charge as long as you like, until you have determined if you will miss it :D

Exactly this.

Re: Will I regret Selling my Mark IV?

Exactly this.

I can't say I have met anyone that got rid of a Mark IV because they were tired of it or wanted something new. I would not even think of letting mine go, although I own other amps, and there are a lot of amps I want in addition to the Mark. I never really found it very hard to get the sound I wanted out of it either.

Re: Will I regret Selling my Mark IV?

if you arent a 'tweaker' then having an amp like that makes little to no sense. i used to spend all kinds of time messing with my line 6 duoverb. then i bought a budda, one of the most straightforward amps i've ever used. now i actually play instead of twisting the knobs, lol. instead of trying to use the amp to get more sounds i changed my picking/playing. what a difference that made. yes, i still use the line 6 but dont mess with the knobs much.

so if you are a 'plug and play' guy you'd be better off with a plug and play amp. mark iv is supposed to be a killer amp though so maybe have both?

Re: Will I regret Selling my Mark IV?

I am beginning to think that maybe adding something more simple to my amp collection might make a lot of sense. Maybe one of Bruce's 5E3 combos might do the trick without breaking the bank.
I guess I just get tired of trying to coax decent tones out of my Boogie at apartment volume levels. An act of futility to be sure. My gigs are too few and far between... but each time I play I wind up saying dang this Boogie never sounded this good in my apartment.
Thanks a bunch guys, I guess that pretty much settles it. It's a keeper. So maybe I'll just buy some pedals to round out my sound, or add a smaller wattage combo to my stable. But it does indeed sound like selling the Mark would be a mistake.

Thats great.

Not sure how this applies to my "+1" comment?

Re: Will I regret Selling my Mark IV?

I thought I was respectfully disagreeing.

OK here's the post I agreed with:

OK so you don't feel that...

The MKIV is a classic?

That the OP will regret selling it?

That it will cost the OP out the ying yang to replace?

If the OP is not happy with something he should not replace it?

And that you wish the OP ill luck?

Your post seems to say otherwise? At least as regards to the amp and its worth (both monetary and otherwise) . I'm not sure where the disagreement is? Thats why I asked.

Re: Will I regret Selling my Mark IV?

The main thing I am was trying to point out is that OP should hold on to the amp because there are obviously some doubts as to whether or not he is happy with it. If asked directly I would definitely advise to hold on to the amp, at least until he is certain he likes the new amp better. It can always be sold down the road to cover the cost of the new amp. I think I have effectively made that opinion clear regardless of relevance to the quoted text.

I don't believe in Luck, but if I did I would certainly not wish ill luck to anyone

At this point I am a little confused myself :)

OK, Now it's clear- Might help to actually say what you dis/agree from the beginning next time- cos you didn't say anything of the sort until I asked for clarification. Your initial post sounded elitist i.e. "It's not possible for someone to be unhappy with a MKIV"

Re: Will I regret Selling my Mark IV?

No problem..... Never actually had someone call me on a quote here... Guess I had it coming :19:

Ever since I obtained my Mark, I have never looked back. I would never encourage someone sell theirs, unless they were giving up Music completely or something.

Re: Will I regret Selling my Mark IV?

No worries, I just couldn't figure out what about my post caused your comments. For the most part we are in agreement! :bigthumb:

Re: Will I regret Selling my Mark IV?

I have a Mesa/Boogie...

I know exactly what you're saying and how this happened. This was my solution:

I bought a 15 Watt Gibson Goldtone. I got it cheap. I love it. I love the Mesa too.

I found the Goldtone at a garage sale. It's 3 knobs and 1switch make me set and forget. I don't think I would be happy on a gig with only this amp, though, even if it sounds like freakin clean liquid.

The Mesa always sounds great on gigs (as you said) because we can pump them a little harder. Also, their versatility helps on gigs for rooms that are a bit challenging.
