Will I Still Need A Buffer If I Use The SFX-01?

Guys..I use quite a few effects pedals between my guitar and my amp,but I've always solved all of my problems by using a "buffer pedal" right after my guitar and then inline to all of my pedals...This takes care of any line loss, highs, and noise to my amp's input....

Now I'm wondering...If I use the Pickup Booster SFX-01 first, would it replace what the buffer does,or would I still require the buffer? I don't have the SFX-01 yet,but I'm anticipating this situation..Does the Booster not only boost the pickup signal, but also alleviate this pedal loss before the amp?

Does the SFX-01 have a true-bypass circuit?

If this is the case, then I think you would probably still have to use a Boss pedal or something similar as a buffer.

Ahhhh.....Great point! Yes the SFX-01 is true bypass....You answered my question Benji! Thanks buddy.....I can only hope that using the SFX-01 and the buffer together don't create a problem? I can shut the SFX-01 off but the buffer is on all the time? Guess we'll have to experiment...

It's either buffer before the SFX-01 or the buffer after it?

No prob. :)
What kind of buffer are you using? I used to use an old Boss enhacer pedal as my buffer back when I used effects. It worked out really well, as far as I recall.

I'd say buffer before, BTW. :burnout:

I use the Pure Tone...This pedal doesn't color and it also doesn't add any extra noticible boost or noise to my overall signal..This is also a discontinued unit and I Love mine...

John; I just noticed this thread. The thing is, the SFX-01 is a "buffer" of sorts. While your buffer is a current amp only, the SFX-01 is both current and voltage. It would be a shame to chain them.

If it was me, and considering your "mod" skills, I'd convert the "bypass" function of the SFX-01 to run through your buffer. Kind of an A/B SFX-01/buffer control. It would be pretty simple really. I can give you some tips and ideas on some neat ways to do it, if you want.

Let me know. ;)

Anyone get any reccomendations for a buffer still on sale? A recent pedal addiction has led to bit of drop off in tone.

Re: Will I Still Need A Buffer If I Use The SFX-01?

I use a Visual Sound Route 66 as my buffer, as it has the Pure Tone's circuit built in. Lucky for me it also provides compression and OD :).

Art....The SFX-01 only buffers when engaged I'd imagine? So when the SFX is off,I'm not getting any buffering of my signal from my thoughts on it.First let's see what happens if I run the buffer before the SFX-01 and what it does when I kick the SFX-01 in? Maybe I can get away with using my current "working" setup, but just adding the Pickup Booster? Hopefully?

Exactly....Rather than offer just a $50 stand alone buffer, they've added the buffer to their pedals...The stand alone buffer works great though!

Thats correct. The thing I was thinking of, is somewhere around here is a thread where Evan says that the resonance switch won't be effective unless the guitar is plugged directly into the SFX-01. It would just be a shame to lose that.

But here, I'll describe the "mod" I was thinking of. Its pretty simple.

Take the portion of the input-to-output wire that constitutes the "bypass" function. Run those two wires, (essentially, input and output), to a small stereo jack. Make an adaptor cable that has a matching small stereo plug, that goes to two 1/4" guitar plugs.

Plug that cable into the new mini-jack on the pedal, and the other two ends into the input/output of the buffer . . . and voila. SFX-01/buffer A/B switcher. :)

A simple SPST switch added into the SFX-01 would bypass, the "bypass", so to speak.

Just a thought. ;)

Art...Sounds like a cool idea really,as I'd hate to lose the resonance switch function...Do you have a picture of how this would work buddy? You know I'm only a hands on kinda guy...

If I don't get it before the nights over, I'll have it fisrt thing tomorrow.

Stay tuna-ed. ;)

Take your sweet time buddy....I don't own the Booster yet...

Well . . . you know . . . I do have a little electronics experience. :laugh2:

I could always do the mod for you. If I screw it up, (I won't), I always have my pedal to replace yours. ;)

Anyway . . . here's the scoop:

bypass.jpg

Two of the terminals of the bypass switch should be shorted together. Break that line, (where the red "X" is), and connect those two wires to the tip and ring of a 1/8" stereo jack. (Shown in blue.) Like a Walkman-style headphone jack. You could use 1/4" if you can fit it in somewhere.

Then, add the SPST switch, (shown in red), so that you can have normal bypass operation. As in, no "buffer" plugged in.

Option 2: That buffer looked pretty small. Perhaps its circuit board would fit right inside the SFX-01 case, saving the jack and adaptor cord. ;)

More details available upon request. :laugh2:

I can send you a picture of the circuit board of my buffer? It's not too big,but I doubt it would fit within the Pickup Booster?
