Will my Shop Know how High to set pups?

Hey everyone, will be replacing my EpiLP custom stock pups with a Full Shred neck and Custom bridge...I've seen alot mentioned about the height of the pup in relation to the strings for optimal sound.

Will a typical guitar repair shop guy know what the "right" height is? Is there sort of an industry standard, or does the pup come with "recommended" settings?

Would love thoughts on this because this is the first time I've upgraded pups and I want to make sure I give myself the best chance to love what this upgrade can do.

Thanks,

I think it's something that you'll have to let your ears decide. Since your picking attack, guitar's action, and amp, are different from others, you should go by ear.

I usually make the adjustment by standing up, playing in front of the amp, and making small adjustments with a mini-screwdriver. You can also use a medium pick on Duncan bolts, to avoid accidentally marring your finish or pickguard.

I like to lower the pickup, then gradually bring it higher till I hear the tone sort of swell up, then leave it right there. It seems to have the most dynamic response at that height.

yes, the typical repair shop guy should know the right specs

as Joneser suggested though, you'll want to decide for sure with your own ears

you can check in Dan Erlewine's book "how to make you electric guitar play and sound great" (or something like that) for the setup specs that many 'name' players use on their guitars if you want to know what ballpark to start in ... then adjust to taste like GJ recommended ... i would not automatically trust that a guitar tech would know what to do unless the guy has a great reputation ...

good luck

I think the guitar tech just sets it at the recommended heights the manufacturer sets. You can just adjusted to your personal preference later, like the other guys have said.

There's what's standard and then there's what's right for you. They'll know the former but only you know the latter.
