Will the 5150 combo do "stoner" and Sabbath? +2 more questions.

I'm broke, and insane. :chairfall But I gotta ask...

Will the 5150 do stoner/Sabbath/CoC?
!!EDIT!! Will it also do this without a pedal?

Two more questions:

1) Will an attenuator on the output, nicely squash the brightness? (Last time I had one was the Tom Scholz Power Soak decades ago).

2) Do you have to see the ID plate on the amp to determine whether it's a 5150 or 5150 II? Or, is there an exterior difference between the two to differentiate in a photo?

I bet with your neck pickup on, and tone rolled down it will. That's assuming "bass on 10, treble on 0" is going on, as well :)

Re: Will the 5150 combo do "stoner" and Sabbath? +2 more questions.

yes, but IMO an orange would be more what you're looking for

Re: Will the 5150 combo do "stoner" and Sabbath? +2 more questions.

you might want to consider other options if price is the only factor and you want stoner sound? high gain metal is the 5150...

Re: Will the 5150 combo do "stoner" and Sabbath? +2 more questions.

It'd have a bit too much high-mids and grind to do stoner metal, IMO.

That said, there was only one version of the combo - no II.

Re: Will the 5150 combo do "stoner" and Sabbath? +2 more questions.

I've got some great COC sounds from the head version. Crank the mids, roll the treble off a bit. Sounds awesome.

Re: Will the 5150 combo do "stoner" and Sabbath? +2 more questions.

My vote goes to yes it will do it, but there are much better choices.

Re: Will the 5150 combo do "stoner" and Sabbath? +2 more questions.

If you use the crunch channel, it should work fine. But I agree that there are better amps for that style.

Re: Will the 5150 combo do "stoner" and Sabbath? +2 more questions.

Just go with a Laney. If they're good enough for Tony Iommi, they're good enough for you too. That'll do stoner rock just fine.

Re: Will the 5150 combo do "stoner" and Sabbath? +2 more questions.

would you consider quens of the stone age stoner rock? :). i really like their tone and am looking for a smaller wattage amp :(. i don't really want an attenuator, i'd rather get like a 30 or 20 and mic it for gigs.

Re: Will the 5150 combo do "stoner" and Sabbath? +2 more questions.

If you don't watn to blow a huge wad of cash, look for a clean Sovtek Mig 50 and an appropriate pedal. That, combined with a nice cab, should work well for what you want.

Re: Will the 5150 combo do "stoner" and Sabbath? +2 more questions.

The Sovtek Migs are extremely solid and toneful amps. You can't go wrong with one of those.

All-tube Laney or Orange are solid choices also, as is the tried and true JCM 800.

Look for older Ampeg guitar amps (1970's). I think QOTSA use V4's and V4B's but there's also ampeg guitar combos in your wattage range. I think VT-22 is one.

Re: Will the 5150 combo do "stoner" and Sabbath? +2 more questions.

Well Sludgenutz already owns a Sunn. Trust me, he has big and clean covered. And Cream, QOTSA use Ampeg V4's.

Re: Will the 5150 combo do "stoner" and Sabbath? +2 more questions.

Also beware that an Ampeg V4 head is seriously heavy. Quite a bit heavier than a Marshall.

no kidding. I was luggin one around last weekend. Christ on a pogo stick...haulin that damn thing around, then to try and swing up on top of the cabs just about knocks your back out.

BIG +1 to the SOVTEK suggestions. I know a lot of bands that record w/ Marshalls, Fenders, Ampegs, etc, but use the Sovteks for gigging, because they're cheap, and can definately handle the tones (matched properly with pedals).

Personally, I'd steer clear of the 5150s, unless you truly beleive you'll still be playing metal for many years to come.

Me? I'm too all over the place to ever stick to one genre. So my search has begun for the absolute loudest amp possible with the least amount of breakup.

I want my **** to sound like a god dam piano at 185db

c'mon guys, remember, sabbath used oranges & marshalls

since he used them as a reference point, suggesting a sovtek seems a little off

Will it do it? Yes.

Will it do it as well as some other amps for similar amounts of money? No.

There's way better choices for the money.

Sabbath used Marshalls, Laneys and Mesas. For some odd reason Iommi hated Oranges.....they only time he ever used them was in a music video and that was only because that's what the club it was filmed in stocked as their permanant backline.
