Will the 5150 combo do "stoner" and Sabbath? +2 more questions.

Re: Will the 5150 combo do "stoner" and Sabbath? +2 more questions.

Sabbath used Marshalls, Laneys, and Mesas. For some odd reason Iommi hated Oranges.....they only time he ever used them was in a music video, and that was only because that's what the club it was filmed in stocked as their permanant backline.

Right you are, he also used them on a couple of occasions live. Because of the same reason above.

All you guys made great points. I can't even respond to it all. It would take days!

G.A.S. SUCKS!

You guys are right. When the amp is right, it is naturally right. "F" ebay!

Re: Will the 5150 combo do "stoner" and Sabbath? +2 more questions.

....But then again...what if one were to put 12AT7's in the pre-amp...and GT-100's in the closed speaker box?

G.A.S. NEVER ENDS!

Either way it's voiced too bright. Unless you start playing death metal you'll wind up selling it within a year.

Remember to use the Force Luke.....

Speaking of which.... Anybody catch the insane **** storm over at the Stoner rock forums? If so, is that actually Joel?!?!(owner of electric amps) if its actually him, there is no way I would ever buy an amp from Electric after reading his BS.

yeah, I read that crap. Took me by complete surprise...well, almost. I know when he was doing the Matamp thing a few years back, he was awesome, but since the switch to 'Electric' somethings gone horribly wrong.

Re: Will the 5150 combo do "stoner" and Sabbath? +2 more questions.

Yeah thats what everyone has been saying. He's being a class douche about everything.

Oh look, Joel started another thread..... Christ..... Its just getting worse.

I've been trying to figure out if his account was hacked or if he's finally flipped his lid.....

....I've talked to him via email a couple of times; good dude, but not neccissarily that stable. Then again, he's a musician.....

Re: Will the 5150 combo do "stoner" and Sabbath? +2 more questions.

c'mon guys, remember, sabbath used oranges & marshalls

since he used them as a reference point, suggesting a sovtek seems a little off

The Migs sound eerily marshall-like. Like I said, if you don't have the bones for an old marshall or the desire to get one, the Migs are a great alternative.

Re: Will the 5150 combo do "stoner" and Sabbath? +2 more questions.

How about the Iommi signature head? The Laney GH100-TI.

I see them go for cheap as chips on Ebay. They apparently nail the Sabbath sound but don't really do anything else. Kind of a one trick pony. Anyone here ever used one?

I have seen them evil bay, but never played one. I will keep a sharp eye on one. I do not need an amp right away, so this is to my advantage. One saving grace to is how the player contributes total tone of the entire rig. Tony/Jimi/Jimmy/Eric/Carlos/Jerry Cantrell contribute to the final tone in their own ways...even if they were given identical gear!

The Laney AOR, and TI are on my short list!:13:

Re: Will the 5150 combo do "stoner" and Sabbath? +2 more questions.

I will definitely consider that amp too! That amp seems too good to be true as far as "price point" is concerned. I do not have any knowledge of how the GH50L is constructed...but if it has a modular "surface mount" input jack, and tone pots soldered directly to the pc board, I will wait.

If it's anything like the GH100TI then the tone pots are mounted to the chassis and the PCB is soldered to them. The tube sockets are also chassis mounted and PTP between the sockets the PCB. The TI uses a torroidal power transformer....I don't know about the others. IMO it's an extremely well built amp. The only problems I've read about them is that Laney can't package worth sh*t, so they're known to arrive with broken tubes.

Toroidals are nice. They are more expensive manufacture, and the final result is a quieter transformer.

That sucks about the broken tubes!
