Will this humbucker still work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi everybody. I am upgrading my pickups and bought a Dimebucker and DMT Dime Time neck pickup on fleaBay. So I received the pickups today in the mail and noticed a small chunk of wax in the top right corner of the bottom pickup of the humbucker. The piece fell out so I was wondering if it's going to effect the performance of the pickup. I circled the area in red to show the area where the wax piece fell out. I am just getting back in to playing electric guitars and I am far from being an expert on pickups so any help on this would be greatly appreciated. I plan on installing them tomorrow but don't want to install it if it's now going to have problems. Thanks for your help everybody!

Looks like a small piece of the wax potting broke off

Should be fine

Thank you daenius. I was wondering if it broke off and exposed an area that would cause a problem with the performance. It would have been a bummer to install it and then have it not work right lol. I can't wait to see how they sound!!!! Thanks again for your help.

NP!

As long as it's generally wax potted it should be fine. Wax potting is to prevent it from feedbacking. Unless a significant portion of the wax came off, you shouldn't run into problems.

As long as no actual piece of wiring came off or was damaged inside, your pickup should still function properly without feedback problems.

wax potting is in the coil, and in speces between metal parts....or at least the bit that actually does something is located there. Anything on the outside serves no purpose
There is nothing that can remove that wax once it is in the coil save for removing the coil wire itself.

Thanks for the info on them. Question for you. If it is enough wax to cause a problem with the pickup then can I fix it somehow by adding wax or should I send it in for repair. If I can add wax if there is a problem with feedback then do I cut the band that wraps the two pickups together or is there a way to pop the ring off and then put it back on. It was a little chunk of wax but it looked like a piece from the corner of the pickup. I hope it still works fine. Also is there a certain wax that they use for pickups? Thanks again for your help. Much appreciated!

Thank you AlexR. The wires all look great and the guy didn't cut any of them down. He also took them out of the same model guitar that I have. That's a relief to know that they rub the wax in to the pickups because it looked like a good chunk came off of it and I was worried that it exposed an area. Thanks again AlexR.

That tiny bit of wax can't possibly cause feedback problems for you. But in the off chance that it does? Easy, you send it to Seymour Duncan for a full service of wax potting for just $10. They are happy to repair any pickup, Duncan or not. They'll do a way better job than you possibly can because fixing the wax potting yourself is... pretty damn annoying, you need to heat the wax, dip the pickup in it and all that jazz. Install it and happy playing! :D

Thank you for the info. I will install them today and if it sounds off then I will send it in to them. That's awesome that they provide that service for pickups that are not even SD's.

Re: Will this humbucker still work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That piece of wax has probably been loose for a long time, it won't hurt anything, as has been said, any wax on the outside it just leftover from the process, it doesn't do anything. They don't "rub" it in, they melt it and dip the pickup in it and let the wax soak in between the coils. If the spot where the piece broke off is bothering you, just take a blow drier to it (not a heat gun like is used to remove paint, just a blow drier for your hair) and warm it up some and it will smooth the area back out. Just don't hold it in one place so long you damage the plastic.
