Hey guys just bought a new LP std and was wanting to tune to open e to play some slide and was wondering if it would do any kind of harm to the neck. Ive tuned my other guitars like this and didnt care too much because they werent as expensive as this one. So i just wanted to get some thoughts on it from some guys on the forum. thanks for the help.

I forsee no problems except if you are using heavy guage strings, then you might need to make a trussrod adjustment

Open E!?!?!?!?!! Good God man! That is the FORBIDDEN tuning. The E stands for EVIL.

It will destroy not only your Les Paul, but you also your SOUL.

Tune it back to standard now!!!!

I've just tuned my guitar to EADG#BE (G to G#) because I thought it would make a riff I came up with sound a bit better. Well, it sounded worse than I expected;(. Anyway, now I looked at this thread... ooops?

well i guess im computer retarded cause the link isn't working. anyway it was supposed to be a link to a cool video of " stay with me " by the faces

Re: will tuning guitar to open E damage my guitar

i have a friend who tuned his Les Paul to open E.

Three years later? BAM! Herpes.

Here is a very cool alternative slide tuning: Drop High E - just tune the high E to D.

Then, the bottom 5 strings are in standard, and the top 5 strings are in open G. Fast, and easy! standard rhythm, slide leads. Try this for Tush by ZZ.

Thanks aceman im going to try that one out! I just learned to play the rythm part of that song a few weeks ago, i think its time to tackle the slide parts in that one too.

Re: will tuning guitar to open E damage my guitar

Northwinds is right, It all depends on what gauge string you are using, a heavier gauge could put to much stress on the neck, and if the guitar ever fell off the stand face down then it could break the back of the headstock because of the extreme tension of the strings pulling on it
