Windows 7 won't isolate inputs...

Hey all.

I just upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I'm trying to get my recording stuff working so that I can continue some sessions and am having trouble with my interface.

I'm using a SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Platinum with the bay mounted I/O interface. It's not the most high-tech approach but it's always served me well.

Win7 doesn't have a selector/mixer like the one in WinXP. I previously was able to select Line In 2 as my source (It's a pair of RCA connectors on the front), then tell my recording software (Adobe Audition 1.5) to use that input, then patch whatever I want to record into my analogue mixer.

Win7 doesn't isolate the inputs, and even though I can hear what I have plugged into the mixer, it won't record it.

I also can't get my software to run properly, but that's not really the issue, as I have downloaded a trial copy of the newest version and it won't record either.

Any thoughts?

Re: Windows 7 won't isolate inputs...

I assume you can hear your source because you're monitoring from the interface or mixer instead of your pc sound card output. You should be able to tell the computer to use the soundblaster as the recording device by right clicking on the speaker icon in the system tray and selecting 'recording devices'. If it isn't listed here, I would say you have a driver issue. If it is here, and is selected as default, what does Adobe show for the input source on the individual tracks? When you arm a track and play/sing do you see the peak meter move at all?

I've turned all external monitoring off. I can hear what passes through the card. The input I want to use is selected as the default recording source but it won't actually record.

I'm going to try different recording software...

Re: Windows 7 won't isolate inputs...

Windows 7 does have a way to select different audio devices. You right click your sound tray icon, and go to recording devices. Then use the Set Default button on the bottom right.

Re: Windows 7 won't isolate inputs...

Windows 7 is alot easier in my opinion to get reocrding devices just go to control panel. Does Adobe only recording what is coming in through window? Otherwise you should be able to use any of the drivers to run it (like ASIO, MME etc)

Re: Windows 7 won't isolate inputs...

with Win7 just right click the speaker icon in the lower right of your screen and select "recording devices". from there you whichever one you right click and set as your "default recording device" will be used by default with any software. Same applies for output device as well.

edit: you can also adjust more advanced settings in by editing a devices properties and configuration in that same menu

This is where my problem lies. I can hear the audio being passed through the sound card via the input I've plugged into, REGARDLESS of what input is selected as default. The software will also not record audio. At all. Nothing. Like I've hit record with nothing plugged in.

Edit: I don't imagine it's the physical card that is the problem, as it was working fine under WinXP as of Friday which was just before I upgraded.

Re: Windows 7 won't isolate inputs...

What interface are you using?

My SoundBlaster Audigy2 Platinum is my interface. I have connected my straight-up analogue mixer, in Stereo, to the Line In 2 RCA connectors on the front of the I/O Unit that fits in a drive bay.

Re: Windows 7 won't isolate inputs...

Make sure to download updated window 7 64 bit drivers form the hardware manufacturer!

Re: Windows 7 won't isolate inputs...

I've re-installed the drivers and it seems to be OK now.

Thanks for your help guys.

Now I just need to find a new DAW software that works with Win7...

Re: Windows 7 won't isolate inputs...

Just downloaded Reaper. Decent program so far. It will likely do everything I need it to... Thanks!

Re: Windows 7 won't isolate inputs...

Cubase 5 and 6 work well in win 7 as far as i have heard (i run 5 essential fine although it is only a 32 bit program) if you need to upgrade any further

Re: Windows 7 won't isolate inputs...

Does Creative have new software for Win7? They used to have their own mixer software that would run on XP so I would see if they have the same for 7.

Re: Windows 7 won't isolate inputs...

Windows 7 replaces the GUI for sound apps like the ZS2 with it's generic GUI.
It did it to my ZS2 and from memory it wouldn't give me Aux 2 on it.
It's one aspect of W7 that sux. [ Where's my interface GUI? ]

Re: Windows 7 won't isolate inputs...

I use Reaper (64-bit version) with windows 7. Never had a single problem.

Re: Windows 7 won't isolate inputs...

I thought I had it working but for some reason it started delaying the input. The frustration has gotten the better of me, so I've stripped down my old XP Install to the bare essentials and am using it for recording purposes. Now I just have to shut down, unplug one hard drive and plug in the other and re-start when I need/want to record. my case has an easily removable side panel, so it's not a huge pain.

I'm getting another desktop PC from my parents that I may set up as my recording machine, then all I'll have to do is change inputs on my monitors and hit a button on a USB switch for my KB and mouse.

Why not just have the two drives in the one machine and do a dual boot. That's what I do because my Aardvark interface has no 7 drivers. The sound files are still accessible no matter which OS i'm booted into.

windows will install a boot loader on which ever drive is C: drive.. If you do it you will have to re- install one of them. [ XP would seem the practical choice. ]

That is the plan for the near future. I have a session tomorrow evening that I have to be ready for, so this will work for the time being. My bios has a boot control too, which I think I can use with my existing installs, I just need to take the time to figure it out. My overheating car is the priority for today tho...
