Wire cutters for clipping guitar strings?

Re: Wire cutters for clipping guitar strings?

I picked up a mini wire cutter from Home Depot that I keep in my guitar tool box. It's the perfect size for snipping small gauge wire, strings, and even the occasional finger nail.

The box-end ones are nice. I use one that I've had for awhile now. Just kinda lives in my guitar stuffs kit.

+1!

Seriously, if you are a professional you have a duty to make sure that the instrument you have just worked on is safe within the bounds of what is reasonable.

If a customer asks me to work on a guitar that is strung in such a way as to present a hazardd to myself or anyone else i have no hesitation in retringing it and billing them. I've had people call me out over this 'cos they've just put new strings on and they think they're OK but it's in my TOS so they've no excuse...

I never buy expensive tools as the guys in the shops where i work keep "borrowing" them. My favourite string cutters is one which cost me about 99 pence (about 40 cents) about twenty-two years ago...

if you use it for cutting strings only, it WILL last you a lifetime
Amen, that's what I'm talking about right there. I've got a trusty one that I pilferred from my dad and I can freaking cut rocks in half with that biotch.

I'm working towards being able to use my buttcheeks.

Re: Wire cutters for clipping guitar strings?

For cutting strings, I just use some Craftsman needle-nose pliars with cutters built in. They've got a lifetime warranty, so I really don't care if they break - though they show no signs of wear at all. I've got a Leatherman type tool that does the same thing, but I always misplace it.

I use these for wire stripping and pretty much anything else to do with wires. I've bought the cheap ones, but they don't seem to hold up. This one has lasted a few years so far. For pickup wires, I've used my teeth several times, which probably isn't a good idea, but it's pretty effective.

My dad worked for GTE for over 20 years, so he can strip wires faster with a pair of electrician's scissors than I can with that crimping tool!

or do like B.B. does with Lucille and wrap the entire length of that shyt around the post all nice and sloppy like

Re: Wire cutters for clipping guitar strings?

i got several different wire cutters and pliers lying around. I use the pair nearest to me. I have the planet wave's string winder/cutter and it only works on the large guages now. The smaller ones (smallest being .10) now just slip between the strips instead of being clipped. shame, good idea.

What about the folks who spiral the end of their strings so they look like whoosh marks in a cartoon when somebody runs away really fast? What is that about?

As for wirecutters, this just seems like the weirdest thread. I bought a wirecutter for about $6 at a grocery store 20 years ago and it's still cutting strings today. Just changed a set last night with them. Does Radio Shack make theirs out of Play-dough?
