Wire gauge is Top Secret !

To end a recent cotroversy ( Jazz and Demon are 42 or 43 ) I asked for wire gauge of Duncan pickups to Duncan compagny and they answered that this information is "strictly proprietary" then non available ...
So we still need evidences on this matter .
If the Demon is 42 gauge then it is quite a Brobucker !

Jazz is a PAF clone and almost certainly 42... who knows on the demon?... Or more importantly: Does it really matter as long as it sounds good?.

And that Duncan isn´t giving out trade secrets for free to everyone that asks is what I would have expected..... It´s like asking coke ""what are the ingredients and mixinv ratios?" ... as soon as they give that out thjey may as well close up shop ;)

Really it wouldn't be difficult to find out this information by surgery on their pickups ...
And this information matters for us to understand more about pickups and choose better .

I didn´t say it would be hard to find out, just that it wouldn´t be the smartest move for SD to post specs....

My point is if you know the wire guage and insulation type in addition to all the other specs (which are already public), you can start winding them yourself.... and SD obviously would rather wind it for you, as that´s what they make money doing ;)

BTW, the demon has matched coils, a fullstrength A-5 magnet and isn´t scatterwound.... It may sound similar, but it definitely won´t sound the same ;)

Re: Wire gauge is Top Secret !

Are you ready to wind at least 8000 turns on each bobin by hand ?
I am not !
( even if I had the bobins , slugs , screws , wire , baseplate , etc ... )

Re: Wire gauge is Top Secret !

yes.

Would I personally do it in this situation to clone a Duncan? No... but I´m not a competing manufacturer that makes their money solely off of selling low quality duncan knockoffs .. I know of at least 2 that already exist, though ;)

Re: Wire gauge is Top Secret !

The physical size of a coil can tell you...
A jazz coil would be a lot smaller if it were wound with 43... it is roughly the same size as a 59 coil.
Look at a JB coil which is wound with 44 to 16k... it is SMALLER than a Custom coil at 14k with 43.
A Custom coil and a 59 coil are roughly the same size with different gauge wire...

actually, there is a good deal of info regarding wire gauges in the Q & A section on the main site. The rest you can probably figure out with some experience and common sense.
I wouldn't expect SD to hand you an answer as to what they use.

Not only that, but there are different types of the same gauge - plain enamel, formvar, etc. In addition, the actual thickness of wire can vary from one batch to the next.

Re: Wire gauge is Top Secret !

I read some time back that the Screaming Demon had 44 gauge wire and the coils didn't appear to have much wire on them. It wouldn't take as much 44g to get to 10K. Custom UNWINDING a JB???

Any competitor would have the knowledge/resources to take a pup apart and figure the specs out. :laugh2:

Very true.. but why waste money on R&D (or rather reverse engineering) when you can have one guy read you the specs off a forum post ;)
